On the last episode of Stay High…
… I crossed my arms and looked at her with a blank face, but after a few seconds of her looking at me with a smile, it wasn’t long before I started laughing too.
Our laughing quickly faded away as I heard the voice of Nate Jacobs, and saw him coming near us, staring at me with a creepy smirk on his face
Nate stopped a few feet in front of me, still smirking like he knew something I didn’t. It gave me the creeps, and that’s saying something coming from someone who binge watched all types of horror movies in one night.
“You got a second?” he asked, pretending to be casual, like we were cool. Which we weren’t.
Sienna looked at me, and I could tell she wanted me to say no. But I was too curious and maybe just a little reckless.
“Sure,” I muttered, closing my locker and walking a little bit further with him.
He leaned in slightly with his voice low enough for only me to hear.
“You were at that party, right? With Jules.”
The way he said her name made my skin crawl. I nodded slowly.
“She’s trouble. Watch your back,” he added before walking off like he just gave me a weather forecast.
I stood there frozen for a second until Sienna pulled me back to reality.
“What the hell was that?” she asked, grabbing my arm. “Since when does Nate Jacobs talk to you?”
“Since today, I guess..,” I answered, more confused than ever.
The rest of the day felt like walking through a fog. Nate’s words looped in my mind like a song I couldn’t shut off.
She’s trouble. Watch your back.
By the time the last bell rang, my nerves were more calm. I made it to the parking lot searching for the baby blue car I owned, only to stop dead in my tracks when my eyes locked on it.
Ashtray was there, leaning back on the hood of my car like he’d been waiting all day.
“Hey,” he said, barely glancing up.
I walked closer, cautious. “What are you doing here?”
He shrugged. “Needed to talk.”
I stayed standing. “Then talk.”
Ashtray hopped off the hood and stepped closer. “You remember that night?”
I crossed my arms. “Not really. Pieces. Faces. Jules.”
“Good” he said. “That night wasn’t what you think. And Jules… isn’t either.”
Before I could say anything else, he turned and started walking away.
He didn't bother to look over his shoulder even once.
I looked around anxiously, my nerves back on 100. I spotted nate, staring me down before smirking and walking away. I shivered in disgust before getting in my car, pressing the button, starting it up and driving off the school lot and to Sienna’s house.
Something weird was definitely going on with him and Jules. And maybe Ashtray.
