“We were kids so my first impressions weren’t anything groundbreaking! I thought it was pretty cool that he had white hair and eyelashes, it made him stand out. He was funny, and it was nice to be able to relate to someone who was also born different from their peers. I didn’t think that much about why he had so much time to visit when he should have been in school, I assumed that he skipped. I thought my mother was just being kind and reviewing lessons with him, but she was full-blown homeschooling him. I also thought it was normal to have your friend stay the night for several days. I didn’t process the implications until I was an adult and looked back on those memories.”
