I don't always feel like listening to a 17 minute song, but when I do -- this is a favorite ❤️

And you worked yourself to the bone While the people say what they say It’s the neighbors anyway They don’t know what’s good for your life
And I see your head hangs low In the black shadow, half shadow Living room is fitting room is sitting room is fit for your crying
Don’t be ashamed—don’t hide in your room For the woman is, woman is the glorious victorious The mother of the heart of the world

you once wrote about a method for figuring out what to do in life, and it was a two axis matrix i think? did it have a particular name? hope you and the bebz are doing well and thank you!
yes!!! and i found it!!! it was nearly impossible thanks to this godforsaken website and the way that search engines index it (or don’t index it??) but here we are:
https://gowns.tumblr.com/post/178432938568/this-is-for-all-the-people-who-dabble-in-a-bit-of
it’s from jessica abel! she has a great blog / newsletter about buckling down and doing creative pursuits. here’s her original post, which i adapted into my own personal needs:

for more resources for “figuring out what to do in life” i recommend:
the artist’s way*
lynda barry’s what it is + picture this
no mistakes by keiko agena**
bird by bird by anne lamott (for writers)
natalie goldberg’s writing down to the bones and the long quiet highway (former is for writers primarily, second is about her journey with zen buddhism; i thought i wouldn’t like it but i found it quite compelling)
steering the craft by ursula le guin (very much for writers)
hold still by sally mann (for photographers / ppl interested in having a family in an unconventional way)
big magic by elizabeth gilbert (has a few groanworthy passages but overall i found the book positive and inspiring like a long letter from a supportive mom)
*you know what i always hear when i recommend people the artist’s way? “oh yeah i’ve heard of that,” “my friend keeps telling me about it,” “it’s on my bookshelf but i’ve never picked it up.” just do it. do it. DO IT. then do it again. i’ve done it three times and i should do it a fourth.
**yes, the actress from gilmore girls!! i’ve taken photos for her comedy shows in LA. she gave me a signed copy. she is very very nice. her book is the same.
sufjan stevens, djohariah (2010) / elizabeth peyton, flower ben (2003)
if sufjan stevens has taught me anything, it’s don’t judge a 17 minute and 3 second song by its first 11 minutes and 44 seconds.
