Heads up everyone! Scam Warning!

Yesterday afternoon, I got a DM from someone I’ve never met named @depap1. They claimed they accidentally reported my Tumblr blog and apologized, which I appreciated at first. I didn’t expect to get a message like that and it legitimately stressed me out. I filled out a report to Tumblr so fast because I was scared of losing my blog. But then they told me I had to handle the situation through Discord by contacting a “Tumblr corporate security head,” and that’s when the red flags went up.

Tumblr does not handle reports or account issues through Discord. That’s not how any legit platform operates. This is almost certainly a scam designed to scare people into giving up personal info or access.

Another thing that stood out to me is that they never told me the username or the pfp of the account they supposedly confused me with. If it were a real mistake, that would have been the first thing they explained. The vagueness was such a huge red flag. So I didn’t write them back and I just blocked them.

If you get a message like this, do not engage. Don’t click anything, don’t add anyone on Discord, and don’t panic. Just report it to Tumblr and protect your account.

I’m sharing this so nobody else gets caught off guard. Stay safe out there! Screenshots below:

When i got to the discussion of payment they tried this shit. This is bullshit btw, if someone cant "pay an invoice because security blah blah blah" they cant pay you at all.

They want to fake a payment and then try to get you to send money back they never sent

Do not give people your paypal email to RECIEVE money

Make an invoice and send it to their email.

Some of you may be aware, but for those that don't, there's a new scam going on in Tumblr where a person comments on your post, saying "there's something wrong with your account, I can't message you so please DM me". Upon first glance, the account does look legitimate with a few reblogs, but their likes and following page seems way too suspicious to be an actual account.

The first message, I received in March. I did reply in the common chat, thinking they may be a real person just being kind enough to warn me. But I got no reply, and I discussed with my friend and came to the conclusion that it may be a scam.

The 2nd screenshot, it's from just minutes ago. Also both accounts have the same pfp, reblogged the same things, and the message is the same, word by word. I've confirmed with multiple people and we all agreed it's indeed a scam to get you to dm them to hack your account.

If any of you get similar messages like this, just block these accounts. It's highly probable that it's a bot or a scammer. Take care of yourselves and please be safe🩷

Just noticed that the info text when someone new starts a conversation with you now warns about the “accidentally reported you” scam 👏

has anyone else heard from @kintsugi-tigerstripes ? because I believe his account may have been compromised, I received a weird DM from him that upon investigation on Reddit seems to be a scam he may have fallen prey to:

this is when I did further research and found a thread on Reddit that explained how the scam works. someone must have done this to him, and he reached out on Discord. at this point, the scammer changed his tumblr's email address and took control of his blog and is now sending DMs like the ones I received. my account is not facing deletion, it's a tactic to make you panic and reach out to the scammer on Discord. so if anyone else gets DMs like this from @kintsugi-tigerstripes do not follow the instructions!! I'm glad I followed my instincts and I hope he can get his blog back because this is weird.

I think j-0r-m, a Evillious fan, got hacked by a scammer and is making weird messages to me and my art blog:

PSA: to anyone following @crypticw00rm, DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES REPLY TO ANY POSTS OR DMS SENT TO YOU IF I FOLLOW YOU OR WE ARE MUTUALS. I FELL FOR A *REALLY* BAD SCAM BECAUSE I WASN’T PARANOID ENOUGH. PLEASE DO NOT MAKE MY MISTAKE.

Some pointers:

1. If you are dm’ed by a mutual saying that they accidentally reported you for scamming, and that you will be permanently-banned within 14 or-so hours, DO NOT ENGAGE

2. After sending at least 2-3 messages about how you can fix your situation, the scammer will direct you to a “member” or tumblr support named Samuel York. Initiating any sort of communication with him will lead you to discord, where you will then get on a call and share personal information (I fell for this because I had never seen a scam so elaborate before).

3. You will be asked to verify that you were falsely reported and will have to give a stipon of $350-$500. I gave $500 in my case. To be honest I should’ve disengaged right then and there but I didn’t.

In summary, don’t be a dumbass like I was, and do some background checks before proceeding any further. I doubt tumblr would just wait for some random to dm you about your account getting deleted anyhow.
