Dmanisi is where Dmanisi hominins were found, the 1.85-1.77 million year old hominins who were the first to reach Eurasia as far as we've found. These hominins have traits that seem to be a blend of Homo erectus and modern humans, Homo sapiens, such as their leg length, while also seeming to have traits of older hominins, and perhaps even some Astralopithecus traits, such as their arms.

In Dmanisis Gora, a recent survey by drones allowed the discovery of a mega-fortress settlement that is from about 1500-500 BCE. This site appears to have been quite substantial, but also only intermittently inhabited, perhaps seasonally. Both the method of discovery and the results are novel. By using a drone, it was possible to take high oblique images of the gorge, which allowed the remaining walls of the fortress to be seen.

The intermittent population has brought into question some long-held expectations about how people lived in the deep past, including how people organized themselves. This type of settlement allows us to better understand how people came together to form settlements and how people lived in areas that didn't leave a written record. The fortress in Dmanisis Gora also helps us understand how the Bronze Age Collapse and how it affected both the area around Dmanisi, which seemed to have been stable at the time, and further into Eurasia. The site is still being studied so there is a lot more that can be learned from it.
