does anybody even gaf about the dmc3 manga

Vergil's issues make him fascinating to write. I approached the DMC3 manga story with 3 truths guiding my understanding.

1- Alice is not human. The beginning game is a test for Dante. Note how he was paid up front and Arkham piloted everything through means of the white rabbit and the mad hatter.

2- Vergil is perpetually terrified. He's hiding in that study with Alice acting not only as a go between but a barrier between him and reality.

3- Vergil has abandonment issues, and an inferiority complex. Arkham constantly drives home that Dante thrived. Alice not attacking or manipulating him outright makes him see her as something different than how he sees Arkham.

No this dynamic is not healthy. This is a motherless child looking for images of his mother everywhere. Alice may have been a copy of Lady, but there were layers that get more twisted the deeper you go.

This is very likely why Trish is the way she is as well, as tulpa creatures are prone to have bits of other factors besides the main components.

Just sending this ask to clear up why I think the Vergil comment is about the amulet. Before I begin thank you so much for all the translation insight and for translating the mangas.

As to why I think that one panel with Alice and Vergil is him commenting on the amulet, it boils down to don't think he would comment much on the outfit, and the response of Arkham being happy enough to praise Alice doesn't make sense to me unless it's about the amulet. Given the fact that Arkham needs it and it was Vergil's mother it makes sense to me that the amulet was what was being pointed out. And why their attention would fall on it.

I could be wrong. The dialogue was vague but that's how I see it.

Tokyopop translation. Vergil: So, still yearning for adulthood I see. Selling your soul to grow up too fast. Like so many other girls wanting to be painted whores...

Yeah, that's what I thought too when I was translating that part and I recall that I was wondering what Vergil could have meant by "that". In Japanese, Vergil used the word "nozomi", which means "desire/wish", but it also has the nuance of "hope" and it's mostly used in the context of wanting something abstract which made me think that he might have been referring to Alice's appearance. It doesn't seem likely that he was referring to the amulet, 'cause why would she want it? It's unlikely that Alice knew the significance of it. "Is that your wish?". Vergil used "sore" which means "that" and it's referring to something that is close/belonging to the listener and that could be something physical or abstract (opinions, ideals)

To me it sounded like he was asking her about something personal but honestly, given Alice's reply about getting praise from Arkham, it's unclear for what he praised her. I think she must have told her that she did a good job getting the amulet, I mean, that was important. I doubt he praised Alice for her appearance. An interpretation I have is that she was angry that the first thing Vergil didn't say to her was a compliment, which might have been the case with Arkham praising her.

Also, while on the subject of this page...Who else thinks that it was stupid that Vergil didn't take the amulet from Alice right away? I thought that was so weird...

I can't believe that after all the times I've rewatched the DMC Animated Series and all the hours I spent making analysis notes on it, I never noticed the Alice and Rabbit reference with Patty's dolls

So, after finally reading the DMC3 manga, I have some thoughts.

First, I'd like to say that I love how feral Dante looks in this art style. It really sells the idea that Dante, at this moment in time, is kind of an amoral bastard (understandably so).

I think Alice was not given nearly as much focus for how interesting I found her. Spoiler is right on this one, she's a gold mine of potential.

Arkham is just as much of a bastard as always, and I could not be happier. I think in terms of DMC villains, he's the very best at being irredeemably evil.

Finally, the last chapter is the best food imaginable for us Vergil fans. My boy:

Cuts a building in half

Bully's his little brother

Gives his brother the magical artifact that is literally crucial to completing his evil plan

Refuses to elaborate further

Leaves

And I could not be happier about it.

All and all, pleasantly surprised. Now for the first novel.

I really love how when i mentioned a fight between Alice and Vergil you were like "alice was right."

And while you are not wrong, both had a point.

Alice wanted vergil to learn how to say 'thank you' (which makes that moment in dmc5 even more bittersweet)

Vergil wanted her to stop wanting the approval of others because he deemed it 'beneath her.'

So yeah. Fun moment.

Oh, right! I think I remember that too!

Vergil was trying (in his own way) to make Alice see her own worth an not depend too much on others' approval.

So Alice and Vergil did have a positive influence on each other despite everything.

I guess there was something wholesome after all ☺
