“É mais fácil amar a todos do que a um só. O amor a toda a humanidade não custa normalmente mais do que uma frase; o amor ao próximo exige sacrifício.”

89. How should we deal with the goods of the earth? God created the world for all. The earth with human aid produces goods and harvests. In principle, they should be at the disposal of all without preferential treatment and be applied for the good of all. Every person has the right to what is vitally necessary, which must not be withheld from him, even though we know that there is a right to property and that there will always be differences in how much people own. If some have more than enough but others lack the bare necessities of life, this calls not only for charity but above all for justice. Compendium 171–175 Catechism 2443–2446 YOUCAT 449
69. What is bioethics about? The word “bioethics” is formed from the Greek words bios (= life) and ethos (= custom, usage, good habit); it is a set of teachings about how to deal fairly with all living things. Bioethics, therefore, is not just environmental ethics, research into how to preserve species and protect habitats. Good bioethics must also be ethics about the life of human beings, for the dignity of the human person is at stake, and not only in genetic research or the question of euthanasia (= May someone kill himself or another human being who is suffering badly?). National Socialism coined the expression “life not worth living”, and thereby the Nazis sought in a criminal way to make themselves masters of life and death. A human being, however, is a person from the moment of conception; as a human being, he has a claim on all other human beings. No one has the right to deprive him of his God-given personal dignity. No one may violate the integrity of another human being: not for research purposes, not because someone is old, sick, demented, unborn, or disabled. The dignity of the person is the true foundation of human rights and the justification of the political order. Compendium 472–475 Catechism 2318–2330, 2274–2278, 2280–2283 YOUCAT 435
65. What are human rights about specifically? The fundamental human right is the right to life; this right exists from conception onward, since from that point in time the new human being already has the status of a separate person. Another human right is the right to freedom of opinion. Next, no human being can be denied the right to earn a living for himself and his family by his own work. The right to marry and start a family, to have children and raise them personally, is also a human right. The human right to choose and practice a religion freely is very important; there must be no compulsion in religious matters. Compendium 155
