Project Necromancer

Alright, I think we all get the gist of what's going on with Project Necromancer, the cloning efforts on Tantiss, why Omega's blood is so important, and how it all ties in to the Mandoverse and Palpatine's return in the Rise of Skywalker. But, I wanted to make a bit of a reference post with posts I've seen going into detail on each aspect of this and also combining some screenshots.

I hate to be That Guy but Project Necromancer is Palpatine's plan to clone himself so he can transfer his essence to the clone and basically

Necromancer is Palpatine's goal all along, to create endless bodies for himself that he can transfer his life force and Force sensitivity into, so that he never dies and can rule forever. And he is starting those ambitions in The Bad Batch. Unfortunately for him, transferring Force sensitivity successfully to another body long term is almost impossible, which has led to this same project, and the exact same efforts, STILL being just out of reach by the time of The Mandalorian, which is after he has supposedly been killed off by Vader in RoTJ.

Now, the specimens are not actually the clones. The clones are the receivers, the experiments. The donors are yet to be revealed, but I would bet a lot of money that they are using the bodies of the Jedi killed in Order 66 (maybe some captured younglings as well--potentially Grogu?) As the M-count donors. This seems to be confirmed by the similar amber pods seen in the Inquisitorius in Kenobi.

However, they are obviously having difficulty, and we know that Nala Se has sworn that this might be impossible, mostly to protect Omega, who as we learn, has already successfully (accidentally or on purpose we don't know yet) shown to have this capability to receive midichlorian-saturated blood without decay or complication.

i don't think Omega is force-sensitive. i'm hoping they'll clear all that stuff up with her blood sample later, but here's how i'm interpret

So, we know that Hemlock now knows that Omega is actually the key to this project. And we know that Palpatine does eventually succeed in cloning himself. However, what happens in between now and then? Something is going to happen this season that sets back this project, or Palpatine would have completed it long before the Original Trilogy, AND they wouldn't be scrounging for scraps and trying to recreate the results by hunting down Grogu in The Mandalorian, a full 25 years after TBB. (Is Pershing already involved in this effort? When and why did Pershing get caught up in Moff Gideon's schemes, and how did those branch off from Palpatine's efforts?)

Finally, in Rogue One, Jyn Erso mentions a Mark Omega Imperial project that was housed alongside Project Stardust (which was begun around the same time as TBB), and Krennic has appeared in TBB and is already working for the Empire. Is it possible that Omega's name is the aspect of the project being referenced here? If so, is she captured again and experimented on? Will her blood end up being used to help further Palpatine's goals? And how much will the clones be able to succeed and push back this project by the end of the season?

@autumnwoodsdreamer The thing about this universe is that the catalyst changes the whole trajectory of a good deal of the season (and to be fair also splits off from the episodic lone wolf and cub formula), as well as whatever the overarching themes and broader story will be. There can still be individual adventures, but there are more things to take into consideration because things get… complicated.

Everybody’s familiar with the stories of Mando picking up someone to have either as a mechanic (like his offer to Kuiil) or as a babysitter for the kid, but what if we had someone already within the story with some hefty plot relevance, all things considered? Someone normally overlooked, the last person you’d think of as the other half of the season’s unlikely duo? Someone who isn’t necessarily along by choice but who also can’t leave, now that they’re both embroiled in the plot surrounding the kid?

Mando turns the kid over to the Client. He leaves, visits the forge and gets the new set of armor, knowing the entire time that it’s being made with the payment he received from turning a child over to known enemies with unknown intentions. Twenty ingots of beskar for a child that saved his life.

He goes back to the Crest reckoning with the guilt that gnaws on him. He keeps telling himself that it’s part of the job, it’s just the way things go sometimes. It’s part of the Guild code, you don’t ask questions and you especially don’t ask questions you don’t want the answers to.

“Unfortunately, finding a Mandalorian in these trying times is more difficult than finding the steel.”

It was a statement of fact as much as it was a threat. It’s easy to peel the armor off a corpse.

He makes it all the way back to his ship and through the preflight checks up to the point he goes to reach for the gear shift and…

And he knows he’ll never be able to live with himself if he doesn’t rectify what is likely the most egregious decision of his life.

So he goes back. He sneaks over rooftops, tuning in to the Stormtrooper safehouse, mapping a course through the floor plan in his head. When he sees the cradle in the garbage, any doubts he had about the Imperials’ intentions vanish.

This time however, when the Mandalorian sneaks into the safehouse to retrieve the child, all he’s met with at the end is an empty lab. The child is gone.

He’s too furious to let panic set in and he has to make an immediate exit, knowing they’ve likely sounded the alarm. As he scours the room with the recall on his visor he finds footprints leading out a passageway he hadn’t been through the two times he was there. He manages to escape, hearing the cacophony of well-placed explosives behind him as troopers shout and start to file into the streets. He makes his way through town on the erratic trail of whoever took the child, seeing it duck around corners and hide more often than not, and as tracking fobs blink to life across the city, more hunters begin to pick up the trail behind him.

There’s a figure in a coat and hood walking too quickly to be casual that time of night. They make as many turns as they can, hoping it’s unpredictable enough nobody will catch up with them just yet. When Mando drops down in front of them while they’re looking over their shoulder he presses a blaster into their chest, forcing them to a stop as they turn and yelp.

Mando’s eyes and scrutiny narrow.

It's the doctor. The nervous little man with spectacles who’d barged into the middle of the deal with the Client, the one who’d timidly protested at the stipulations regarding the target’s acquisition. He holds a bundle in one arm, shaking as he sputters and pleads with Mando not to shoot him.

“Hand him over.”

“Please, you can’t— You have no idea what he’s capable of—!”

“I wasn’t asking.”

Pershing cowers, trembling like a leaf. “I protected him! He’s only a child! I was the only one—! Please, if you care, if you help us escape, I can—!”

Mando digs his opposite thumb into the man’s shoulder where he knows the insignia on the doctor’s lab coat sits, saying “I’m done making deals with Imperials. This is your last chance: Give him to me.”

There are more explosions coming from the bazaar, and the sound of boots on pyroclastic gravel.

Somehow unaware that what he does then is practically unheard of, Pershing yanks the Mandalorian into the shadow of an alcove, looking behind them. “Listen to me,” he says, his voice shaking. “This child is unbelievably valuable to them; if they got their hands on him he would never see the light of day again. I had to get him out of there, it was my only chance—”

The Mandalorian shrugs the doctor off, his blaster unwavering. “And I’m supposed to believe your sudden altruism outweighs your history?”

“You’re the one who brought him back!”

Mando steps closer, digging his blaster in as the doctor flinches. He doesn’t miss the way Pershing angles the kid away from the gun.

More footsteps march through the streets, voices picking up as doors are broken through, laserfire streaking through the haze of dusk. Voices raise over the din, loudly demanding entry and searching for the child.

Mando pulls his blaster back and turns, pushing the doctor forward as he does.

“Run.”
