One of my first Lightpaintings ever! At the #documenta13 (2012) I saw an interactive piece in complete darkness. At night I met the dancers who did it. And out of nowhere I had the idea to do Lightpaintings with them as I had my camera and tripod with me. With some lights we just had with us we improvised in front of this graffiti wall. And as they were dancers they were great at posing. We loved the results and I was hooked. This was my first Lightpainting shoot. Due to its important heavy and armament industry, Kassel was one of the most severely bombarded cities of Germany with more than 90 % of the buildings destroyed at the end of the war.

The giant (12 m tall, 5 tonnes heavy) pick-axe was installed in 1982 as an art installation for the documenta 7, and the citizens of Kassel immediately connected the work with the reconstruction efforts after world war II.

Claes Oldenburg, however, was guided by a very different idea. At the western end of Kassel, there sits a giant statue of Hercules on top of a monumental building on a mountain. From there, a more than 7 km long straight axis runs through the city towards the center. Only a few hundred meters chort of the city center, the road makes a sharp bend to the left, breaking the axis. The pick-axe is now located exactly at the point where the imaginary prolongation of this axis would intersect with the river Fulda, and the handle points directly in the direction of the Hecules statue. Cleas Oldenburg invented the legend that Hercules had thrown the pick-axe right to the bank of the river.
