I have a q (about your 9x05 meta) - because I'm a bit dim: Snake venom and bisexual erasure - sounds very interesting, but my mind can't get from A to B. Maybe you could elaborate? (I love what people found out about the title!) I didn't get the tumblr joke either :/ (what Mary smoked...?). And the bisexual subtextual foreshadowing with regards to the dog not going on the road with them...? Trust me I wanna see this! :D [sorry I'm slow and spamming you about this] (tbc)

The subtext is that the snake is not suppose to constrict AND envenomate its victims.  It kills one way or the other consistently (mostly constricting snakes lack venom).  NEVER BOTH WAYS.  The penis is often called the “One eyed Snake”.  The subtext mirror is that the penis either likes females or males, never both.  Yet it is Dean that says basically “We’re looking at the proof that we have encountered one that clearly does both.”  I see it (a snake that does both, a penis that does both), therefore IT EXISTS.  

Mary didn’t smoke anything she was the one being smoked on the ceiling by the fire.  I’m sure tumblr was all over that joke, but I still haven’t had time to see much of what others have said about the episode!

The dog was the narrative anti-Dean (or rather the S1 repressed version of Dean).  The dog being left behind is essentially the S1 codependent repressed version of Dean being left behind (with Dean going on the road and moving forward).  The dog: womanizing, projecting himself onto Dean (calling him hoss, a ladies man, when the Colonel himself is working with an empty sack…), not appreciating love songs (and is shocked to see Dean is a “softie” because he himself is not which is more projecting)?  All that was Season 1 Dean.  If Dean is leaving all that behind then he is also leaving his repression behind, suggesting he will come to embrace his own bisexuality some time in the future once codependency with Sam is broken.  ^_^

Hope away!  Though I honestly think we better settle for hoping the dog doesn't die (considering all the dean/death parallels we've been dealt so far).  D:  I think the dog will take to the open road at the end.  Just my gut feeling.

Well, the “C” plot is the MOTW plot and we know dogs are involved in the “C” plot for 9x05. Episodes are either A/B or C/B usually. Dogs always reflect what is going on with Dean, just as pie = Cas. Dean getting pie in 9x03 and then Cas ending up in the bunker? I called that from a mile away (it’s been on the bingo card for MONTHS). All last season Dean couldn’t have pie and it kept “slipping through his fingers” just like Cas…

Admittedly, I’d have to go back and rewatch season 8 to be looking for dog references to see how they fit with the narrative but I know they are there (In 8x01 Crowley says "Throw me a bone" to Kevin, I’m sure there’s lots but this is not something I have time to look for ATM *stares down other meta writers*). 8x15 was a whole episode of this (just like 9x05 will be probably). A dog (familiar) was in love with a person that was being controlled against their will being made to do horrible things (they even mirrored some 8x07 Dean/Cas dialogue onto this if memory serves, same writers btw)… they really knocked us over the head with it. This is the only reason I can think of that the writers decided to make Portia a dog instead of a cat, all things considered.

Any time Sam is alone he gets a dog. That’s been since S4 (at least). Now, for S8 Sam hits a dog (on the road). "I did this." he says. He blames himself for the circumstances of the event, just as he blames himself for what he perceives as Dean’s “death”. He felt he couldn’t save Dean, so he did everything he could to save the dog instead… through a doctor, a healer with power over death.

Meanwhile, Dean is metaphorically saved by Cas while he is (like the dog) covered in blood as well. He fights through Purgatory with a separate purpose from Sam for the first time in… ever. This was the first crack in the glass, the first step in the process of shattering codependency for the brothers. And Sam makes it. Now in season 9 it is Dean’s turn.

In terms of 9x05 specifically the dog will probably mirror Dean’s “B” plot (dub/non con issues) in some way. We already know the dog witnesses 2 murders - is a witness to DEATH, just like Dean witnessed Cas and Charlie’s murders. They’ll probably be lots of foreshadowing/symbolism somewhere with the dog and death (because Dean along with codependency must die metaphorically and/or physically at this point).

I know I talked about Abaddon parallels with the witch in 9x04, but the witch herself was also a parallel to codependency, overriding one’s agency through a silent tongue. The witch’s smokey form I referred to as green poison, just like codependency. When Dorothy and the witch become trapped by Dorothy’s will it is illustrating how all this time Sam has been trapped by codependency through his own will. Sam and Dean both keep feeding into this cycle. When the jar (a container for the blood infused bond that ties them together…wow) shatters the witch (codependency) is released and Dorothy emerges through a cocoon of transformation into a version of Sam that is free (literally and metaphorically) and ready to embrace the world.

Notice how at the end Charlie (the female non-codependency version of Dean) says “Now heel.” and kills the witch. This ties both Charlie and a dog reference to killing codependency (the witch). Quite clever of Robbie actually.

The Abaddon parallels I noticed may come into play as well (though we saw at the end the witch was indeed killable). It’s just a complete shot in the dark right now, but the narrative nods to her were definitely there. I proposed months ago that a soul (Sam’s) may be the required thing that bonds the Gates of Hell closed. We’ll have to see how it goes. It’s not something I’m counting on any more if I am to be honest.

But yeah, Sam bonding and locking himself up with Lucifer is a nice parallel too, one that honestly didn’t even ping on my radar (since I’m only looking at the current narrative). Good catch!

Holy shit, the dog references never even occurred to me. Dean does have an interesting relationship with dogs too- hellhounds as a dark mirror showing what Dean could have become?

The dog… is Dean.  We will see this literally in the next episode.  Dean’s dislike of dogs is because he dislikes himself, yet he is brave and loyal to a fault.  All this time he has been Sam’s constant companion, his guardian.  Sam’s three year arch?  It is him saving Dean.  In 8x01 he hits a dog and stops, deciding to save it, which in turn sets him on the path of everything that follows.  Once Sam is able to save Dean he will then in turn be able to save himself.  To do this Sam must show Dean that he is not a dog, but in fact a person all his own…  

Just as Dorothy begun her quest trying to save her most beloved companion so has Sam. <3

Dog references *SPOILERS*

WARNING: HERE BE SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T READ PAST A STORM OF SWORDS.

I'm still reading the aSoIaF series, but I keep getting hit by dog references and thinking "Sandor!" as soon as they happen. The dogs barking when Sandor is brought to where Arya is, as she's wondering who the prisoner is, for example. As soon as I read that the dogs were going wild, I knew it was the Hound, "betrayed by his own kind" as well. 

Then the second Joffrey died, a thin black dog sidled up to Cersei and sniffed Joffrey's body. Cersei. Joffrey. A black dog. THE HOUND!!!

I haven't gotten to the old blind dog at Sansa's side yet, but I know it happens, and there will probably be more dog/Hound references as there have been before the ones I've just pointed out, and I was wondering if anyone else had inner SANDOR!!! screams when they appear.
