Birthday Post: My Favourite Supergirl
Since it's my birthday and I've had such a miserable year (and continue to struggle with health stuff and am having trouble getting the surgery I need :\) I decided to celebrate my birthday by not doing a normal Escher Girls post but posting my favourite Supergirl art of all time by Renato Guedes when he worked on 3 issues of Supergirl (vol. 5 #20-23) during that otherwise unfortunate run where she was often drawn like this.
It is also unfortunate that it had to be the issues during the infamous "Amazons Attack" mini-series disaster, but despite the fact that the actual storylines at the time were not great, his art is fantastic, and he's still my favourite artist to draw Supergirl. Like, she's still in the crop-top/mini-skirt outfit but he made it look really good, AND he gave her blue bike shorts so when she's falling and technically we can see under her skirt and her butt, it doesn't look gratuitous, nor does it look like the point of the scene is to see her boobs or butt. She looks strong and heroic and her torso has room for organs and her legs aren't 3 times the length of her body.
I remember the reaction at the time too (especially coming off the previous art of the other issues) was that DC had made Supergirl "fat" and "ugly" and it's kinda wild that this was considered fat and ugly in superhero comics land at the time.
Anyway, I just love it, and I wanted to share it on my birthday.
