re-reading the hibari vs adelheid fight again bc the way hibari's movements in that fight scene was drawn is just...so awesome to look at. like, it's a classic hibari glaze, but i'm just such a sucker for the cloud flame's propagation attribute in action. i know it'd look so cool with fluid animation. (also i've said this before, but that fight gave me more insight to his character than the the hundreds of chapters before it lol)

only downside is i get jumpscared by daemon with chrome and i stop having a good time bc LEAVE HER ALONE YOU DECREPIT CREEP YOU DONT GOTTA DO ALL THAT

Tsuna, at the start of canon, is a 14-year-old kid, as are most of his Guardians. Simply due to this fact, most of them aren’t exactly going to be wealthy as fuck by themselves. So, this fact is going to apply to all of them unless I write otherwise. We do see that Nana uses leftovers to help with meals and such, but I honestly don’t think Tsuna’s family is poor by any means. Iemitsu makes good money and sends a lot of it home to Nana. Nana has more than enough money to pay the bills, afford groceries for her, Tsuna, and all the extra kids. Tsuna’s tuition at school is always paid. Tsuna always has clothes when he needs them. Nana buys him the new video game consoles for special occasions, like his birthday or Christmas. They have money to live comfortably is what I’m saying. Tsuna’s family itself isn’t rich, but they’re comfortably middle class. Tsuna himself, during his school days, will get allowance and he gets extra spending money simply by asking Nana. Though Nana might chide him for asking, she always gives in, so Tsuna’s normally able to buy what he wants. Now, when he grows up, Tsuna could potentially be an extremely wealthy person. Like, ungodly, impossible levels of rich because the Vongola itself has accumulated extreme amounts of wealth, the kind that makes most people disgusted to even think about. It’s the kind of wealth where even Bezo’s would go…damn, I’m poor. But the thing is that Tsuna doesn’t want that money. He doesn’t want the Vongola’s wealth and power. I think that, even when Tsuna becomes Vongola Boss, he refuses to touch the Vongola funds at all unless he absolutely has to. And by absolutely has to, I mean he does use it to pay all his Guardian’s and Family members enough to comfortably live on, he pays for any damages caused by the Vongola, and that’s it.

While Gokudera comes from a very wealthy family, he has no real access to his family’s money and he refuses any financial assistance from them. He doesn’t want to be associated, for a large portion of his life, with his father and that does extend to his father’s money. Gokudera, by himself, is poor and if it wasn’t for the fact that the Vongola pays for his tuition and his apartment, Gokudera wouldn’t be able to afford either thing. He works a part time job to have money to spend and I think that’s how Gokudera prefers it. He likes knowing he worked hard for the money he earns. Now, as an adult, being paid to be a Guardian, Gokudera lives much more comfortably. I also think that, as an adult, when his father passes, Gokudera has gotten to a level where he’s become not as estranged and does inherit quite a bit, making him individually wealthy. He keeps it mostly in the bank though or invested in stocks and bonds and doesn’t really like to touch it. To him, he didn’t really earn it and it feels wrong to spend it, though he might splurge here and there on things he really wants (ghost hunting equipment isn’t cheap) or to fund his passion projects and research.

Yamamoto’s family owns a successful restaurant. Let’s be real here, there’s no way he comes from a poor family with that knowledge. I think, like Tsuna’s, Yamamoto’s family is comfortably middle-class. Their living space above the restaurant is nice, Yamamoto’s well-fed, he has new clothes whenever he needs them, he can fully partake in baseball despite it being an expensive sport. He gets spending money freely given to him anytime he asks for it. He’s not so blind as to not realize that he lives better than a lot of people and he’s grateful for everything he gets. I think that, as an adult, Yamamoto continues to be comfortably middle-class, possibly even leaning a little towards the richer side since I think he goes on to become a professional baseball player, even if it is only in the minor leagues and athletes get paid quite handsomely. Yamamoto doesn’t need a lot though and unlike Gokudera, who is prone to splurging on things he wants, Yamamoto saves quite a bit of money. Let’s just say, he’ll buy his own home outright eventually, without needing a mortgage.

Ryohei (and Kyoko, since they both come from the same family) are more characters that I do think fit pretty solidly into middle-class status. They didn’t grow up impoverished in the slightest. Their parents have good jobs and there was never any worry about paying the mortgage on their house, the bills, or putting food on the table. Both kids were able to participate in all the extracurricular activities, classes, and camps that they wanted to growing up. While it meant their parents worked a lot and weren’t around a ton, their parents tried to make use of the time they were home to connect with their children. Both Kyoko and Ryohei get allowance as kids and teenagers (though they do actually have to do chores to earn it; unlike some of the others, they will not get their allowance or spending money given to them if the chores aren’t done) which is a fair amount – enough for spending money for the week but not so much that they can freely spend it on whatever and have plenty left over. Even as adults, both kids randomly get ‘allowance’ still from their parents for special occasions or for whenever the kids go back to their childhood homes to help their parents out with something that needs fixed or a project. Both kids are raised with somewhat of an appreciation of needing to work for the money you get, and both are taught to budget (though Kyoko understands it far more than Ryohei), but they were never taught to really be scared about money, if that makes any sense. As adults, they are both paid fairly as part of the Vongola Family.

While the Bovino are a smaller Mafia Family, they’re still Mafia and aren’t hurting for cash. Lambo was kind of a spoiled kid within the Bovino too. He grew up getting whatever he wanted from the other Bovino members, was always given pocket change for being ‘cute’ and he’s never, ever in his life really had to worry about money or to think about money as a concept. Even when he came to Japan, Nana kind of spoiled him and then Tsuna does the same. If Lambo begs and whines for something, he normally gets it and I do think that Nana gives the younger kids allowances too, just like she gives Tsuna spending money. The Bovino also send money to Reborn, which gets given to Nana, to help with Lambo’s care and honestly, it’s more than it needs to be. Because of this, Lambo grows up into a teenager and then an adult who has no concept of money. It’s freely available to him and he’s been kind of blessed that way. He’s rich enough that he’s never had to learn to budget, which is better than most people.

Weird headcanon here but I do think that Hibari’s family is fucking loaded. They’re really well-off. I just cannot imagine anything different. Hibari is raised to know the value of a dollar though and the importance of money. He’s taught from a young age how to make the most out of his money, how to earn money, and how to invest his money. By the time Hibari’s an adult proper, I think he’s accumulated quite a bit of wealth on his own. Even without the Vongola Guardian stipend, he doesn’t have anything to worry about in the least financially and can freely move about and live his life without having to worry too much about money matters.

Mukuro has money. We don’t know how he makes the money or where he’s gotten it from. I do believe part of it is him simply taking all the Estraneo’s money when they left, not because he particularly wanted to associate himself with that filthy Mafia money, but because him, Chikusa, and Ken needed that money and, in a way, Mukuro felt it was owed to them for what they had to suffer through. He probably took on additional jobs, possessed rich and influential people and stole their money, among other things. What we do know, from canon, with M.M., who is notoriously money-hungry, saying that Mukuro pays the best, is that Mukuro is fucking loaded. He’s seriously rich…it’s just where he got all that money that is a mystery and maybe it’s best for everyone if it remains that way.

Chrome, back when she was Nagi, came from a rich family. She never had to want for anything; money was something freely given, along with materialistic things. She simply never really cared about all those material things. She would have given it all up, to fall into that spoiled rich girl feels disconnected trope, for actual genuine connection or love from her parents. When Chrome becomes Chrome, she no longer has access to any of that money. Chrome, by herself, is well below the poverty line. She has access to some of Mukuro’s money, what he gives her, but until she’s an adult and starts getting paid for jobs and missions, and gets her stipend as a Vongola Guardian, she doesn’t actually have a penny to her name.
