@dollsahoy -- my post got long and reblogged, but you were talking about DollJunk’s following and the super inane questions they get... YEP, those kinds of inane questions are honestly why I constantly shy away from any kind of public Online Presence. At the same time, you know, I think there aren’t a lot of honest discussions about the fact that Famous People -- even people with small ultra-niche specific followings -- have to begin blowing off inane questions and dumb comments. They literally cannot respond to every follower’s comments... and we accept this. Your favorite YouTuber is not actually your friend, and you get that. The weird space is the transition, where people move from a regular person to An Online Presence, and the demands that makes on the person. (After all, even YouTubers have family members they probably need to drop everything and respond to.) My friends who are musicians, at one point, had to make the decision that they were going to blow off local birthday parties and baby showers in exchange for building their career.  And it sounds arrogant to discuss, but it’s a conversation that I think ought to to happen more. Your event organizer friend or convention staff or popular forum mod is probably swamped -- ask someone else for details! (Or,  you know, just look it up your own damn self!) In subcultural spaces, sometimes I honestly don’t have enough TIME to reply to every hangers-on -- I try to be a good cheerleader, but I suppose it makes me extra irritable when people act entitled to my time, as if I was their own personal Alexa.  (Of course, other than my type-A-con-staffer thing, my personal motivations are rarely to be very helpful OR to grow my career. I’m generally motivated by... whatever drove Andy Kaufman. Just doing the bit is always funnier to me than external validation, heh. DEATH BEFORE BREAKING CHARACTER.)

Madeline, a 19-inch porcelain doll by Tonner

Before Robert Tonner made his iconic Tyler Wentworth doll, he had an early iteration of the “American Models” series. These dolls were slightly shorter (19 inches versus 22 inches), less articulated, less curvy. And while most of them were vinyl, as far as I know, there were some porcelain versions. This is one of them - a porcelain version of Madeline. You can see a copy of the vinyl Madeline here, and the 1998 catalog page.

My mom pronounced it “madd-a-lynn”, perhaps to differentiate her from the character from children’s books. Not sure if she’ll ever get a bird name, like my other Tonner dolls. (She still feels like “mom’s doll”, not “my doll”.) I’ve mentioned her before, but these are the first “portrait-y” images I’ve captured.

Madeline is wearing the “traveling dress” that @dollsahoy made for Mattel Cynthia. The dress also fits Chickadee.
