Waid's Fantastic Four take on Doom is one of the darker, villainous, and ruthless takes of Dr. Doom. In the Unthinkable arc he sacrificed his first love, Valeria to demon lords in exchange for power and makes an armor out of her skin. When Doom has the Fantastic Four sans Reed tortured in his dungeons, Doom makes a comment to Ben that Reed's skin would make armor worthy of his form. In Avengers Forever (2021), Doom Supreme is an alternate universe Doom who has a similar history, who made that same sacrifice of his love. The Doom being interrogated by him is horrified at this and Doom Supreme answers not just hers---and its cuts to Doom Supreme and his Reed Richards. Implying that this Doom made good on making his Reed into armor, and that he loved Reed, for that is what gives the sacrifice power. In Marvel 2-in-One (2017), Reed reveals to Ben that when he first invented the Multisect to travel the Multiverse, he met a Doom wearing the skin armor who actually spares him--because in that universe, Mister Fantastic is dead. They eventually become friends, because as the end of that issue reveals.. Reed never gave up on him.
