"don’t touch it," you warned, without even turning around. "i’m serious, minho. if you stir the rice before it’s ready—"
"you’ll disown me?" he guessed, hovering suspiciously close to the pot.
"no," you said, glancing over your shoulder with narrowed eyes. "worse. i’ll let my abuelita handle you."
he immediately backed off, spoon still in hand. “not the abuelita threat.”
"then keep your hands to yourself."
doongie, sitting like royalty on top of the fridge, let out a smug meow, clearly on your side.
you smirked and stirred the arroz con pollo yourself, the scent of garlic, peppers, and tomato swirling around the kitchen like a hug. the cats were scattered around the apartment—dori batting at your slipper, and soonie lounging by the window.
minho leaned against the counter, arms crossed, watching you like you were the main event on a cooking show. “you know,” he said, “you’re dangerously hot when you cook.”
you rolled your eyes, but a smile tugged at your lips. “you say that every time i’m near a stove.”
"it’s always true."
you tried not to grin as you moved to chop cilantro. "you’re just trying to get out of helping."
"me?" he said dramatically. "i offered to fry the plátanos and got banned after one oil pop incident."
"you screamed like a soap opera."
“i thought i was dying!”
you turned to look at him, hand on your hip. "are you gonna be a good assistant or just roast yourself all night?"
"both," he said proudly, slipping behind you and wrapping his arms around your waist. "but mostly just be your number one fan."
you relaxed into his touch, stirring lazily as he rested his chin on your shoulder. “smells like heaven.”
“smells like memories,” you said quietly. “feels like home.”
"you are my home," he murmured.
your chest ached in the best way. you turned your head and kissed his cheek.
he tightened his grip on your waist. "and if your rice tastes even half as good as it smells, i might propose."
"you don’t even have a ring."
"i’ll use a plantain slice."
you snorted. “romantic.”
suddenly, dori launched himself from the counter and made a beeline for your sock. minho tried (and failed) to block him.
“this house,” he muttered, chasing after him with zero authority, “is just vibes and violence.”
"and culture," you added, holding in a laugh.
after you plated everything—rice, juicy chicken, crispy golden plátanos—you both sat cross-legged on the living room rug, cats circling like mini food inspectors.
"you know what i love about this?" you asked, mouth half-full.
"the food?"
"yes, but also this. just… us. my culture, your cats, our mess of a little life."
he nodded, chewing. “it’s chaotic. but it’s ours.”
you leaned into him, plate balanced in one hand. “you fit here.”
“you make it easy.”
he kissed your temple, soft and sure. doongie pawed at your plantain and got gently swatted away.
you laughed again. "we should cook together more often."
"we should never let the cats in the kitchen again."
"fair."
and just like that—over rice, love, and a house full of cat hair—you felt it. rooted. held. home.
