Double-Barrel
Whiskey - ⅔ oz
Sweet Vermouth - ⅔ oz
Dry Vermouth - ⅔ oz
Orange Bitters - 2 dashes
Angostura Bitters - 2 dashes
Stir everything with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
From George J. Kappeler’s Modern American Drinks.
Similar to a Manhattan, but made with equal parts of whiskey, sweet and dry vermouths; additional orange bitters brings some more complexity. I quite like this kind of medium Martinis and Manhattans, the mixture of sweet and dry suits those who prefer a more balanced drink. The style of whiskey is not specified, so use either bourbon or rye; whichever you go for, choose one that has a higher proof than 80.
