While the rest of the town is freaking about these odd creatures, Ghosts, as the Fentons call them, Danny himself is dealing with the aftermath of an inter dimensional portal opening right atop him.
Sometime, far in the distant future, when the sky is a quiet hum on his skin and his breaths come easier, Danny would admit to his closest friends Sam and Tucker that the portal had cut him in half, split right at the waist.
It had hurt like hell for a moment, before his spine was severed and paralysis set in. The energy had demanded to be released. Danny, in a moment of clarity, *ate* the energy, absorbing it into his shattered being. With the combination of his soul leaving his body, and his heart being restarted, the energy coalesced in a ball in his chest, cold as the deepest winter winds.
Danny had to change, there was no other option. It was either that or complete death, along with the annihilation of unimaginable magic exploding across his town. He would not have it.
So he changed. He was folded inside out, the magic spreading from inside and over him, hiding the little beating heart in this new form. Danny, moving on pure instinct, mind close to shattering, did what any colt— whatever he was— could do in that situation. He fled.
Later, when he awoke from the dingy building the townsfolk called a hospital, he would say he had no recollection of his three weeks spent in the wilderness. He’d claim horrendous headaches overtook him in search of the forgotten memory. The ponies would leave him, respecting his space.
He had nightmares weeks after that, of a strange place made entirely of green magic and shifting landscapes. Of creatures twisted by after-life, beyond death, they come again and again and again and—
Jasmine knew something was wrong, and, unlike the townsfolk, she was not afraid to confront Danny about it. He did not want to talk about it. Not when his nightmares started to seep into the world from that accursed scar in reality that hummed beneath his hooves.
Not when those same hooves slipped through the ground, when his eyes flared green and he found he could hold his breath for minutes… hours even. Did he even need to breathe at all? In his anger, in his frustration at the parent’s enthusiasm. Unaware and ignorant of the harm they had caused him— Danny changed once more.
It was quietly, far behind their house deep in the depths of the forest. Here, Danny came to stare up at the stars, in the early morning when the night was at its darkest. And the stars at their brightest. Stars he would never reach, not like this, not with his useless wing.
The ball of eternal winter heard then, and answered. Danny found himself at home in an abysmal body, who harboured stars across its inky pelt, across its dazzling white mane of feathers. Who carried constellations in its wings and magic shimmering from it in almost wasteful excess.
He was gone most nights after that, the strange energy sustaining him through his daily life. A few times, he thought of telling his parents about it, about his secret form. If not for their ruthless attacks on the *others* that slipped into his reality. The others that bore such nauseating similarities with him.
So, Danny did what he could and fought back. Not with an intent to kill but with protectiveness flaring in his chest like a raging blizzard. He’d catch them in that little ball in his chest, listening it sing joyiously. Like he was fulfilling a purpose he had not known before. He felt complete when he fought and won. Not so much when he released the creatures back into the tear.
But it was small price to pay. Danny had everything he needed.
He would protect this town.
And he would protect himself.
His parents would never know. But Sam and Tucker could, and they did, and they still loved him.
That was more than enough for Danny. Even if he yearned to vanish into the eternal void of space and travel forever in the empty expanse, following distant lights and shapes and colors. Becoming apart of the constellations.
It was only when a royal emissary arrived, one of the Princesses no less, inquiring about strange sightings.
“A draconequus?” Tucker asked during school lunch once. “What’s that?”
Danny shrugged, then winced as pain laced up his ruined wing.
“It’s an ancient species of chimeras, spirits of chaos. They are reality warpers and even stronger than Alicorns. The last one was defeated by Princess Celestia many moons ago.” Sam said, ever the esoteric enthusiast.
“Danny doesn’t strike me as a herald of chaos.” Tucker said and Danny kicked him under the table.
“Ow, alright alright— man, you kick hard for a pega—“
“shhhhh—“ Sam hissed, pointing int he direction of the courtyard. A purple alicorn— you didn’t see one of those everyday— was asking questions around the town square.
“What do you mean ‘shhhh’ there’s no way she’d hear us from all the way over there!” Tucker huffed. Sam glared.
“she’s an alicorn! They had super sharp senses, Tucker!”
Danny had gone completely still. He could not look away from the purple eyes staring at him. It was entrancing in a nauseating way, like the princess was siphoning knowledge from him by simply observing him. Or maybe it was the familiarity he felt when staring at her. One immortal to another, staring into the face of eternity.
Was it just him, or was there a hint of… fear in her eyes?
Okay so, that’s story ig. Dunno if I’m gonna add more to this au but I did wanna point out why I decided to make Danny half-draconequus and NOT a changeling (which makes more sense on a surface level)
So first, the portal. What is it? The portal itself is a tear in reality, and only a reality warped would be able to handle that level of magic, hence why Danny becomes a draconequus. The magical influx, needed a vassal that would be able to contain that magic specifically. So draconeque.
the Infinite realms still exist as it does the the to show, but it’s different to fit the mythology of mlp.
The Fentons are scientists who study different kinds of magic. But they are not unicorns, which is why they build machines instead. They are actually very technologically advanced, which is why Twilight will be taking special interest on their family work. That and their son and the odd green light in his working eye.
I do have a distant idea of Discord finding out he isn’t the last of his species and completely taking Danny under his wing as his unofficial father figure. Or maybe official father figure since Jack… is well, Jack.
Oh and also, Danny’s power is blackholes. So just… lots and lots of celestial energy that he uses to siphon energy from his enemies. Or change gravity, or… whatever else you can use blackholes for.
