why were u questioned about ur hair in tokyo?

i have naturally blonde hair and also at the time had a teal dyed streak…very exciting in Japan. i got a lot of questions like “is it natural?” “why is it blue?” “can i touch it?” from people of all ages, even in Tokyo. sometimes complete strangers asked if they could take pictures with me ksl;fd…that might have just been because i was an incredibly obvious foreigner though lmao

i think blonde hair is considered very trendy and Cool™, but dyeing your hair a wild color like that is commonly frowned upon/most often not allowed at schools and such…when i was getting ready to go back to Japan as part of the JET Program, they did a lot of discouraging participants from dyeing their hair because the Japanese teachers would be likely to view it as setting a bad example for the impressionable Japanese youth

which…….is funny to me for several reasons– but most of all because, despite me keeping my natural color (and letting my teal streak fade out), i found out like a year into my assistant teaching position that most of my students had assumed THE ENTIRE TIME that i had been dyeing my hair anyway…
