You nodded.
He kissed you like he had done so a thousand times before, and it came easy to him. You smiled against his lips as he whispered ‘i love you, i love you’ time and time again. You woke from your oblivion with your back against the wall and his very own dark eyes looking right into your soul. You wondered if he could feel your heartbeat thudding against its cage. Victor's breathing came in ragged draughts and compared to your own joyful expression, the matter seemed to be of the utmost seriousness to the older man. He reluctantly released you from his arms and you created a respectable distance between you two, hair disheveled and rosy cheeks, you both looked like you ran a mile. Silence reigned between you two. And the corpse on the table. What would your uncle say? It might be best to say it in short sentences and slowly, as you thought he might actually have a stroke when hearing the news. You wish you could have something interesting to say.
“Please, stay with me. Tonight.”

The rest of the living area seemed to flow in perfect synchronicity with him: a sculpture there, a drawing there, the intricate human body there…the master of the house was slowly following you. A ravenous look in his eyes and a gait that followed that of a wolf stalking its prey. Compared to the rest of the macabre surroundings- you felt alive. More alive than ever. This is what the poets wrote about, what every romance book you secretly read in the quietness of your room dictated. You thought that it will never be you. A part of you wanted to ask ‘Why?’, but you knew better. And you knew you weren’t afraid, nor shy. Even if you have never been like this with a man. It felt right, here. Now.
His bed had the same sanguine quality his scarf usually had. Red. He came next to you gently, like he didn’t want to scare you. His eyes half lidded and aimed solely at your lips again, softly bruised by his kisses not even ten minutes earlier. Softly cured black hair and firm jawline gave him this sense of monumental dignity that only made him ever so handsome. You wanted to giggle again.
“For the first time in my life, I find myself more interested in life than death. Your doing. All of it.”
You didn’t grasp the gravitas of his words before he grabbed you again. He kissed your cheeks, each, then your lips and your neck.
He started a fire. But it was nothing compared to the heat of him on top of you.
The thick blanket covered you both halfway, protection from the rainy weather of russet autumn and from his heavy gaze over your naked form. His back muscles, each a ridge you griped on to for support from something you couldn’t yet name. He kissed you all over while whispering praise ‘you’re so beautiful’, ‘my desire’, ‘my life’.
Your cheeks were in flames over his attentions, from softly kissing your neck with his lips to your breasts, placing each of them in his hands and drawing the most peculiar sounds out of you that seemed to only make his need for you greater. He raised on his knees and you felt like closing your eyes. The soft kiss of the fire behind him was illuminating his olive skin. He looked at all of you while palming his desire. ‘I have half the mind to never let you leave my side.’.
He touched you where only you ever did before and you smiled, “Does this feel good? Hm?”. You could hear the smile in his words and you fully succumbed to the feeling of not being in control anymore. You nodded. His fingers, rougher than yours and way bigger, felt like an unnatural pressure between your tights, slowly and gently then faster until you didn’t wish to open your eyes at all. Victor touched you everywhere he could get his hands on, and you pulled on his arm.
He grabbed your legs and spread them. The feeling was horrible and you wanted to get dressed and leave. Forget the night outside. Gasping, you felt like the world might end there and then. Eyes tightly shut and wishing he would stop, pushing his form that was bent over you softly.
“It will pass. It will pass.”
It did pass. Albeit slowly, and not fully. But it did. He would delight in pushing as far as he could and draw the most pathetic of sounds out of you. Eyebrows relaxed, eyes half lidded and noses touching. His breath on your face. Musk and sandalwood all over you. The romances were right, people do lose their minds over this. You never wanted this to stop. But your paramour seemed to be in almost pain, shuddering and pushing his face in your neck- as your face and eyes would send him over the edge already. You grabbed him ever closer to you, arms around his neck and legs over his hips pushing into you again and again. Your sounds were loud and dominating the room besides the firewood crackling. Tonight's sleep will be simply exquisite.
He came apologizing, for it had to end. Eyebrows drawn in climax and those black eyes of his saying more than any great poet could.
You had no more words to speak.

Not sooner than later, after you announced your engagement, Victor left.
Drowned in work so deep he barely had time to write to you. You could almost laugh at the cruel joke fate seemed to play with you. You despised the meaning of a husband, now you would give anything to have him with you. Your fiancee’s passion knew no bounds for his craft and sometimes, when you were all alone and could grasp your thoughts tenderly- you thought that the only passion he ever did have, was for his sick obsession. His horrible obsession. That monstrous thought plagued every sense of your being.
He received an expansive plot of land upon which sat a colossal estate, perfect for his maddening ideas. He asked you time and time again for you to come to him, but you refused. You would have no part of his blasphemy. His letters would range from dedications of love to bursts of jealousy and anger you weren’t with him, and about your stubbornness. Your uncle was growing increasingly desperate and pushy towards him to finish his work. The war was coming to an end. Until…
You received no word from him.
Nothing.
A black void needed to be filled. Your heart needed answers and you felt yourself going mad. Your uncle was together with him- he too had been reduced to an illiterate man. You worried. Maybe he had found himself someone else. Maybe it was all a lie. The 100 bedroom estate of your uncle seemed empty and needed something, anything. Before bed one night you had the most terrible feeling. You couldn’t shake that something horrible had happened.
William visited you, the bright young man, told you that he too, was worried. That was it. With an unshakable resolve you left that very morning. Heart in your throat for exactly what you might find.
The estate was more frightening and grand in real life, you knocked on the door. ‘Where was he?’ you thought.
Your fiancee opened the door and looked like he saw a ghost.
“You’re here.”
His black eyes scanned your face. He looked at his brother and back at you. Jealousy seemed to sweep into his gaze but it was quickly replaced with an enthusiasm you saw clear through. The inside of the estate looked abandoned. Leaves littered the ground and you shuddered to think about how cold it could be during the night. Cold and uninviting.
“Come, I have so much to show you.” Something was off. You will not fall prey to momentary enthusiasm towards the man that stole your heart.
“Where is my uncle?” He gave you a quick answer, and asked you to come upstairs for he had so much to show you. He missed you.
You told him you forgot something in the carriage. It seemed to be enough. He told you that you should rush upstairs afterwards and they both left, you stared at their fading forms going up the stairs. A deep breath filled your lungs.
The wind moved through the cracks with a wailing that almost made you run upstairs in fear.
Victor
Your head snapped in the direction of the noise. What was that? Have you truly gone mad? All sorts of things seemed to flow through your mind: the creaking of wood, the wind that seemed to take the air out of your lungs, maybe it was a ghost? Your skin prickled. The light had an almost blue, melancholic effect here. Everything seemed drenched. You heard it again and wondered if you have truly gone insane. Your feet moved forward, compelled by something all too greater than you.
Heeled footsteps each a defined sound on the floor. You couldn’t believe your eyes.
He stood.
All weird limbs like he just learned how to walk and stand. You came closer and tried not to frighten him.
You showed him your hands in a gesture of peace and removed your glove. He seemed curious about them, he seemed curious about your face too- did he not know he also had them? You raised each hand up closer to his face. His black eyes examining the feeling of them in absolute interest. He removed your glove like you had beforehand and you took the opportunity to look over him. Perfect stitches running all around his body- he was chained. He let you lift his arms to look at the heavy iron binds that sealed him into the cold and damp basement. You wanted to weep looking at him, he kept him here. He chained him there into the frigid and foul basement, no sun would shine through to touch his skin. What is the meaning of this?
This is why he wasn’t writing to you. Where is your uncle?
The man made the most curios noise- reminding you of an animal and you noticed the scar on him.
A blind, desperate impulse seized you and you scrambled up the staircase, your dress clutched and bunched beneath your grasp, driven solely by the need to find him. This is a scandal. This is an outrage.
The doors opened with a thud on each side as they hit the wall. Both men stopped and stared at you- almost hysterical and gripping your bodice to steady yourself.
“Who is that? In the basement? Is that your prisoner?”

He showed him to you and you felt like crying once more. He made him, created him out of the legs, head, skin, heart of various corpses. And he lived. He seemed curious about the water streaming down towards the sea and you quickly found yourself looking back into his black eyes. He gave you your glove back and you smiled. He seemed like he wanted to smile back, but all that appeared on his face was a show of teeth. It mattered not to you, as you found this adorable. This man- made out of the remaining parts of various others not of this earth anymore seemed kind. This man- whose very existence you condemned, looked at you and you decided that he had to have a soul. The very thing you found blasphemy, you now saw something pure and simple. For within those eyes you found kindness and curiosity… and pain.
Your name was called out in a brutal fashion by Victor. Who looked, jealous, almost. Jealous and angry. But why would he be angry? Isn’t this the very summit of his ideas? His lifelong dream of overcoming death became reality, yet he seemed angry and disappointed.
William spoke up.
“Is he intelligent?”
•─────⋅☾⊱♰⊰☽⋅─────•
You looked up at the angel statue overlooking the bed. Victor was up talking to his brother and he will come down soon. It felt strange being with him again, he looked… changed. But maybe it is because he didn’t rest at all in the past days.
You thought of the man downstairs. How cold it was. You had the fire to warm you, but he didn’t have anything. Would he even feel the cold? It does not matter to you.
You now knew what Eve felt in the garden.
Climbing down the cold steps, holding the candelabra and the blanket close to you. Could this be a mistake? Instinct took you down there and you called out that you didn’t wish to scare him.
You sat gently on the cold stone as he towered over you and followed your lead. His skin was grey and hues of blue, like patchwork. He gave you a leaf.
“A leaf? For me? Thank you.” Emotion almost overcame you. You showed him the way the light danced over the thin skin of the leaf, showing the veins that seemed all too human like in it. He stared at it and swallowed. His eyes seemed full of wonder and pain. You saw the way he slinked back when Victor came near him, the way he touched his head like he was in pain when he saw his creator. Frustrated that his maker will only look, not see him. Not truly. Words came hard for him and he fought to find them. Wisdom and knowledge out of his grasp. He wished to know, wished to understand.
“Victor.” His eyes longingly looked at the fire dancing on the candles. One of his eyes reflected the orange shine back to you in an unnatural fashion.
“Victor, yes.” You smiled at him “Do you know any other words? Can you say my name?”
You said out loud your name, then grabbed his hand and tenderly pushed his fingers on your throat, for him to see how words are formed. You said it again, slower this time.
“See? The throat makes the words.”
His chains rattled as he mimicked the way you held his hand against his own throat this time. His mouth moved, but no words came out. He looked at you again and flinched slightly, afraid. You smiled again and put the blanket over him.
“I have to go now. Good night.”
Would those words mean anything to him? Probably not. But you wanted to hope that he was more than Victor said. You saw pain in his eyes. Pain so deep you wanted to shake at the thought.
“You shouldn't be interacting with it.”
Victor was dressed in a long silk robe, shirtless, looking every bit the domineering man you tried to forget he was. He probably went to bed and saw you weren’t there.
“It?”
“Yes…it.” He got up and came closer to you. Mocking.
“I thought you would be happy, isn’t he everything you wanted?” You turned to face him, unafraid of his attitude.
Your future husband adopted a mad look in his eyes that you thought had left him.
“Something went wrong, a spark, a connection. The beast only knows one word: Victor, Victor, Victor, Victor again and again, he isn’t in the slightest intelligent. He is all wrong.” He gestured with his hands in desperation for you to see, to understand where he was coming from. You would have none of it- shaking your head in denial over his words.
“I saw pain in his eyes, Victor. And what is pain if not the proof of intelligence? What if in creating him you allowed God’s will to flow unto his heart and create something new, something more pure?”
He chuckled- shaking his head like he couldn’t believe the words coming out of your mouth. A pause fell between you.
“What about my heart? Hm?”
You looked at him. Another terrible shriek of the wind blew between the both of you. The sea was restless tonight and you could hear her all too well.
“You show up with Willam at my front door demanding answers.” He seemed to only get more frustrated as he went on “What did you do, huh? You got close to my brother while I was away? Did he keep you ‘company’?”
You laughed.
His eyes held an unwavering scrutiny, judging and cold. And a scowl decorated his features.
“If I didn’t know any better, I would think you are actually attracted to it.”
“I’m fascinated by him.” The cold bit at your legs beneath the thin nightgown. You wished to be anywhere else right now, besides having this conversation. The warm bed upstairs called to you and your eyes stung with the weight of his accusations.
“And if you wish to know, Victor, all I have done in the past week is pray. Pray for your good health and that you succeed.” Your voice broke and you climbed the stairs as soon as you turned around. Damn him. Him and his jealousy and stubbornness. Damn him because he stole your heart and he is cruel with it.
He called out your name and followed but you didn’t turn around. You laid down on the bed and covered yourself up. You wiped your tears away and looked at the angel holding a silent vigil over you. The bed shifted with Victor's weight as he sat next to you. The fury he had now gone by the gentle way he pressed his big hand over your shoulder.
“I made this for you.” He whispered. He was tired. “I did it for you. All of it.” His curls swept above his forehead and his eyes looked full of sorrow and remorse.
You remained quiet. You never asked for this.
“I’m scared…scared that one day you will be taken from me and-” whispering, he looked away from you and towards the statue “I’ll be helpless in doing anything.”
You raised up to see him better, but he still wouldn’t look at you.
He called out your name with a shaking breath, slightly touching the red blanket on top of the bed. The floor creaked somewhere in the castle. “ I love you, more than life and if you find it in your heart to forgive me… I’m sorry.” You stood with your back to the bed frame, looking at him all slouched over and miserable. Now was no time for apologies, what was done is done and now he must face it.
“You have succeeded Victor- you have succeeded and now you must live with it. Accept him as he is, teach him and love him, for he dearly needs it. Don’t lock him away.” You pleaded with him. Hoping in your heart that he will listen. That he will make things right.
Victor shook his head “I don’t want him. He isn’t what I wanted. He’s an abomination.”
“Does it matter now? Does it Victor? You played God. Now you must look after your ‘Adam’ like He has done. Love him Victor. Love him. You mean the whole world to him. I know it.”
No words needed to be said afterwards. Victor looked ahead like Atlas carrying the whole words on his shoulders. He seemed to find a definite conclusion that night, as you said that. Against all evidence, you harboured a fierce hope that his heart would soften, that he would recognize the creation as a sacred charge given by God rather than a burden.
The fire dwindled to the sounds of the sea that night.

William informed you that your uncle would join you back home, and you had to leave, most urgently. You protested. Neither of the men would have it.
Today weighed heavy on your heart, but you couldn’t know why. You looked back once more at the colossal estate and your fiancee. A part of you wanted to run inside and look at him once more. Stare into those simple eyes and say that you will be back, that this isn’t forever. You didn’t want to leave. The carriage rocked on the road side to side and you clutched your red beetle decorated cross close in your hands. Feeling the texture over and over. You haven’t even said ‘goodbye’ to him.
Something terrible had happened.
Victor came to you soon afterwards.
Saying that the creature's lifetime was short. He tried his best to save him, but he passed. He swore that from now on, his will is focused solely on you and your life together. That you are the only being capable of creating life, in your belly- perfect, pink and pure. His creation was an abomination. And you must forget all about him.
You cried that night. For who will accept him, now? Who will mourn him if not you? Does he have a life after death, a blissful afterlife or a God to welcome him like His child? The cold dark ground would welcome the very same flesh he was plucked from and rearranged once again.
He will become nothing before he could ever dream of trying to be something- someone.

The ballroom was decorated with the most wealthy and influential people of your time. Friends and family alike came from far and wide to see you get married. Dukes and duchesses, mayors and bankers all threw soft rose petals in the air in celebration for the beginning of the rest of your life. People were laughing and singing outside of your golden room.
You contemplated long and hard while getting dressed. You wished you would've cried with joy. You wished you could’ve seen this day as your new birthday, but there was an emptiness in your heart. You wished your uncle could be here, oh how happy he would’ve been. You sat in this very room not long ago, pleading with him to stop pestering you with his wish for you to find a husband. You grinned at the memory.
You opened your bible. Brown and small- it was your mother’s before you. What would she think of the woman you were now? The worn spine groaned in protest as you lifted the brittle paper and felt it in your hands.
The leaf ‘Adam’ gave you fell out from her carefully pressed place within the word of God. You picked it back up and in a coincidence- read the first phrase your eyes caught on to.
“For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.” (James 4:14)
You heard a knock. Then another one.
Your white satin dress made a sound as you raised to your feet, its many layers moving once with you.
Clara was at the door, asking about something or other regarding the food and the guests. She seemed to have tears in her eyes, but you told her you are happy. For this is a happy day. She will receive a new lord of the house and you- and you? So will you.
Your heart fell a bit at the thought, for Victor loved you, he loved you ardently and passionately but he loved his own words more. His will is impenetrable, he will not be the same as your uncle. It will definitely be a change, for you and for everyone else in the manor. But you weren’t sad, not really. At least you could try to convince yourself of that.
Clara held your hand in a motherly gesture as she bid her goodbye’s ‘everyone’s waiting for you, darling.’. You closed the heavy ornate door. Your mind was full of thoughts you wished you could tell someone, anyone, willing to listen.
A very loud laugh erupted outside, followed by many others. You were glad people were enjoying themselves and your hospitality. The sound was like that of a fading world.
You moved back towards the vanity. The large window to the balcony was left open and an icy draught flew in unlike any other. Winter has come and replaced her colorful sister. You probably left it open slightly and the wind opened it back again. How forgetful of you.
You moved to close the doors as quickly as you could. Something seemed to be missing. The pages around the table fell around it when you turned around. You silently cursed and bent over to pick them up once again.
The shadow moved.
“You know… it’s bad luck to see your bride on her wedding day.”
You glanced up, anticipating the mischievous countenance of your betrothed. The shadow moved again and your chest hollowed out all at once. A soundless gasp lodged in your throat. Dread pooled around your ankles, sealing you to the expensive floor with a paralysing will.
The shadow moved once more, all 6’5 feet of it.
