Biting your lip, you stood among the rest of the students, awaiting your turn to summon your familiar. You were so nervous, you’d never been particularly good with any one type of magic, would you even be able to summon anything? Then again, the teachers had set everything up, you just needed to finish the spell in order to summon your familiar. Still, you were worried you wouldn’t summon anything at all. Looking around, about half of the kids had their familiars already. It was clear why witches were often seen with cat familiars seeing how many cats were winding in between student’s legs or resting on shoulders. There were some bugs that crawled across their mage’s, something that made you shudder. You were currently envying the dire wolf that one of the kids had summoned, the student loving up on the beautiful creature. While you envied the kid with the wolf, you wouldn’t deny that you’d accept anything, even a bug. Walking up to the summoning circle, you looked at the table of ingredients. Choosing the items that you thought should go into the circle, you began the incantation, uncertainty filling you. Almost as soon as you finished the incantation, you could feel the mana being sucked from your body until you were left with almost nothing left, collapsing onto all fours in front of the circle as wind and fire whipped around in a burning cyclone, shooting up in the air. The flames were forced out, embers slowly falling back to earth as the cyclone died out. Hovering there, just a couple feet off the ground, was a young blond. Large blue wings beat, keeping him in the air, his arms crossed as he looked around. Finally his eyes landed on you, lowering himself to the ground before walking over to you.
“Let me help you up. You look exhausted, my summoner.” he said charmingly. Now that he was up close, you noticed other interesting features aside from the large wings. A pair of ivory horns sprouted from his head, intertwined with his hair before branching off into different directions. He wore a nobleman’s outfit complete with tophat, yet his coat and gloves didn’t quite fit the rest of the outfit, looking a bit more common.
“How did you… know I summoned you?” you asked, taking his hand, stumbling the moment you were standing, his arms wrapping around you as he caught you. You could feel the chuckle rumble in his chest as he held you.
“Arch-dragons are just cool like that.” he said smoothly, grinning at you. Leaning down, you felt his warm breath against your ear, “What little mana you have left is the same as the mana that was used to summon me, meaning only one person could have summoned me.” he whispered, making you shiver. Looking at him, your vision began to blur, finally passing out from a lack of mana, the boy easily pulling you into his arms before you could fully collapse.
Once you regained consciousness, you learned a lot about your new ‘familiar’. He was an arch-dragon named Sabo, and he was just as confused as to how you summoned him as you were. However, he was here and you weren’t sure what else to do as he followed you around. Not that you necessarily minded. He was strong, smart, funny, interesting, and you wouldn’t deny it, he was attractive. That being said, keeping him around was draining. He’d told you he didn’t want to be bound to some mage he didn’t even know, he preferred his freedom, but without a true familiar binding, you were keeping him there with your mana alone. It was easier than summoning him, but you ended each day nearly depleted of mana without even using any during your classes. Approaching him, you felt the same nerves as when you summoned him.
“Sabo, I need to talk to you.” you said, drawing the blond’s attention away from his pile of snacks.
“What is it?” he asked, stuffing a cupcake in his mouth as he looked at you.
“I… I can’t keep you as my familiar.” you stated, rubbing your arm, the blond bolting up from where he’d been reclining on the couch.
“Why not? I thought you enjoyed having me around?” Sabo asked, trying to hide his alarm. He’d grown attached to you, he didn’t want to leave.
“You’ve expressed your… dislike of bindings, but I can’t keep you here with my mana alone. So you… you should go home.” you said sadly, looking away from him. Sabo looked at you sadly as he nodded in understanding. It was taking all you had and you couldn’t maintain that without a binding.
“Then I’ll let you bind me. But I’ll only accept a very special binding.” he said, surprising you. He’d let you bind him to you? He’d told you that his freedom was important to him and that a binding might limit that, but he’d allow you to bind him? You just nodded, not sure what to say, the blond smiling at you.
“It’s a strong binding, almost as strong as blood magic without the… problems of blood magic.” he said, waving his arms around. You watched in awe as he manipulated his own magic, before finally letting the spell fall over the two of you, “It just needs one more thing. You’re a smart one, you’ve been studying this. You know the next step.” he said, placing a hand under your chin, making you look at him. You did know the next step and it made you blush a bright red.
“Isn’t this… isn’t it a rather… intimate binding?” you asked. Not that you didn’t want to, but is this really what he wanted?
“I care about you, Y/n. More than as a mere familiar. I wouldn’t offer to bind myself to anyone unless it was someone special to me. Very special, so just kiss me already” he whispered. You wrapped your arms around his neck, your lips meeting his own in a deep kiss. His arms wrapped around your waist as you nearly melted in his embrace. The binding wrapped around the two of you, though you barely noticed it, too caught up in the kiss, Sabo still holding you close. Pulling away, he smirked, enjoying how breathless he’d left you.
“I… I love you, Sabo.” you whispered, nuzzling your head into his chest.
“And I love you, my summoner. Now let me make things up to you, you’ve worked so hard to keep me here, used up so much mana, I’ll take care of everything today.” he said softly, picking you up and carrying you to the couch. You were his summoner, his mage, his love, he’d take care of you from now on.
