WIP Wednesday | June 11

I've got far too many things going at once, but this is a bit from the beginning of the next chapter for Crow Parties are Murder, as Neve starts to fit all of the pieces together and finds something unexpected.

The smell of clotted blood followed Neve like a bad hangover as she left the suite, clinging in her clothes, her hair, her thoughts. She paced the corridor trying to make sense of what they knew and what she felt. Neve and the Talons had arrived just on time for Lady Cousland, but far too late for the young Crow now laid out on the small bed in the room where she died. The grief for her death had felt like another person in the room as she had picked through the scene, searching for anything that could complete the picture of what had happened. Illario had shadowed her, keeping just out of sight to let her work and answering questions where he could. He had been helping Teia move the girl's body when Neve excused herself to get some air. More than one bout of violence had been fought through the rooms today, Neve was certain. The different sets of blood, some old, some newer, were testimony to that. Lady Cousland and the Crow, Anniva, hadn't been moved from where they fell. Nothing obvious had been stolen, including diplomatic papers now secured. Rook had been able to stabilize the Ferelden noble with Viago's help, but she wouldn't be able to answer questions any time soon, and it was obvious to Neve that they were running out of time. The clarity of that thought pulled her out of her reverie facing a large painting hanging near the Master suite, her eyes resting on a face too familiar to mistake at any age. A family portrait of man and woman with their four children, all dressed in the kind of Antivan finery Neve had seen in picture books as a child, satin, leather, brocade and feathers. The dark-haired father and fledgling daughter in Crow's leathers, while the mother held two infant girls who like their sister, shared her caramel curls. Illario held his father's hand and stared back at her with his mother's deep blue eyes. "I didn't know that Caterina had taken them out of storage," Illario said softly, as if he had been standing there for some time, looking up at the painting as she was. Perhaps he had. His expression was one she didn't want to interrogate, so she waited until he gave a sigh and turned to her with a slight smile. "When we have time, I'll give you a proper introduction."

I'm just here to say that the complete "no room in my heart" shut down you get from Lucanis if you've flirted with him and burned Treviso is DEVASTATING.

Knowing he'll later have "room in his heart" for Neve just makes it worse.
