Solas is not actually surprised when he falls in love.

He sees it in front of his path, like a downed tree or a large boulder. Over and over again, he tells himself to just go around it. Or step over it. If he can see it there, it should be easy to avoid. He lifts up a foot....

And then he trips and face-plants right into it.

The first time I played his romance, I was like, "I've heard about this elf. What's he about?" And by the end of it, I was like, "Well, he doesn't have much content. And he kinda throws conflicting messages? That lake scene was beautiful tho." Oh, well. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Bioware missing that the lore I actually want here is the name of Nevarra's national dog breed.

I spent way more time thinking about this than I probably should have lmao

Based on the image and what we know about Nevarran climate and real world cultural equivalents, my best guess is is something akin to the saluki!

I'm pretty comfortable identifying the breed in the artwork as a type of sighthound. In DA2, Merrill confirms the existence of 'coursing hounds' in a conversation with Hawke about the 'The Courser and the Wolf'.

"Long ago, a clan lived on the Silent Plains. It was a terrible, lonely place where the sun was forbidden to shine. Their Keeper had a coursing hound. They had run down deer and hares and wolves together when they were young. But they had grown old together, Keeper and hound, and now only dozed before the campfire, dreaming of hunts."

Coursing hounds are primarily sighthounds, and they are extremely lean and fast breeds. The dogs in the artwork are a bit smaller than the average saluki, but the long fur on the ears and tail with short fur on the body doesn't really match any other well-known sighthound breeds of a smaller size.

In ancient Egypt, dogs were commonly mummified and buried in family tombs. A lot of ancient Egyptian art depicts a breed of dog thought to be the saluki. This would fit nicely with the ancient Egyptian influence in Nevarra's design.

Even the wind couldn’t have fled that hound. He ran the Dread Wolf down and grabbed him by the tail! Fen’Harel howled, so loud that the Veil shook and even the stars scattered in fear. But the hound wouldn’t let go. Neither hound nor Wolf gave in. Finally, Fen’Harel bit off his own tail to escape, and away he fled. Ever since, the Dread Wolf thinks twice about playing his tricks when dogs are on guard.

Which brings me to this post

thevulturesquadron I would like to point out that there are no statues of the Evanuris or Fen’Harel in the Necropolis Halls. I feel like there’s a reason and I want to know more. Thoughts? a-midnight-rest My theory is that the Necropolis is originally a seal to contain the worst of Falon'Din's creations.

Does that codex tell why? Did the national guard dog of Nevarra chase the nasty evanuris away?!?! I don't know if that's what's being implied here but I suddenly LOVE IT!

This has unearthed an entirely new rabbit hole for me to fall down on the Necropolis and Falon'Din/Dirthamen that will be its own post probably lol. For the Courser and the Wolf fable, I took another look and found some interesting threads of inquiry relating to Solas.

But then the Dread Wolf came, for the Keeper was wise and kind—the things Fen’Harel hates above all else. At night, he tried to steal into the Keeper’s dreams, to twist his mind and turn him against the People. But even in dreams, the courser guarded his master. He caught the Dread Wolf’s scent and gave chase across the Fade.

Hmmm... stealing into dreams and twisting minds again are we, Fen'Harel?

In Trespasser, Cole shares this interesting tidbit about the Dread Wolf:

“He broke the dreams to stop the old dreams from waking. The wolf chews its leg off to escape the trap.” 

Two distinct references to Fen'Harel mutilating himself to escape pursuit... coincidence?

It’s strange to acknowledge (in my world state), that Solas and Mythal loved each other yet find myself unable to ship them (and a bit nerve-wracking to admit it out loud since fandom can be weird when it comes to Solas and Mythal). I find nothing romantic about them while simultaneously feeling very emo about them, specifically their tragic fall. They make me sad.

And I think the reason for me lies in the nature of their bond.

Solas and Mythal always just were.

Solas and Mythal knew each other the longest, both as spirits and then as "people". This is time immeasurable. I don't view Solas and Mythal as having ever "fell in love" with each other - not in the human sense - because their connection predates the existence of a heart needed to fall in the first place.

Even Solas choosing to take a form comes from spirit devotion and not Solas' choice of the heart. What I mean by that is Solas didn't choose a body, Wisdom did. Solas is the messy complicated ancient elf that comes after who's always seemingly trying to hold onto that spirit bond with Mythal.

In my view, Solas and Mythal’s story is a story of decay - much like the story of Arlathan. Care and love remains between them, how could you not hold love for someone you existed with for eons in two different forms of being? Solas clearly hopes she will one day stand with him again, yet both seem to cling to something that began fading the moment Mythal took a body - seemingly neither accepting how much having a body has changed, and continues changing each of them. Throw on top of this decaying relationship a hierarchical order. Solas served Mythal.

When I ship a couple, it usually comes from seeing two people choose each other, from witnessing the moment love awakens and deepens through choice. It comes from seeing desire and attraction and chemistry (which is why I fell hard for Solas and Lavellan). Circumstances may divide them and they may change, grow, or even stand on opposite sides of a conflict, yet the journey to love is there.

With Solas and Mythal, what fascinates me is the opposite journey. Not a journey into love but a descent away from it.
