Why Did the Dragon Disk Activate?

In one post about whether or not the King and Queen knew Dreadbane, I briefly mentioned him being the reason the Dragon Disk activated. I thought about different possibilities while doing the post, and while I didn’t want to get off-topic in that post, I wanted to post the possibilities here.

One theory is that the Mysticons proved that they were ready. Since the Dragon Disk was described as choosing the new Mysticons, it’s possible that the disk has to feel as through they’re ready. However, I don’t see any special reason for the Dragon Disk to think they’re ready at that possible time.

Another theory is that the Dragon Disk sensed the Mysticons were nearby. As Arkayna and Em were learning about the Mysticons, and Piper and Zarya were disguised as guards, they were all in the room. However, if this were the case, it would likely happen slightly earlier, as the “guards” went in the treasury at the same time as Em and Arkayna, so it would have activated early in the scene. Also, this would mean that it would activate if the new Mysticons were in the vicinity, but would have to touch it to get their powers.

A third possibility is a hybrid of the two. The Dragon Disk needed the Mysticons nearby to sense if they were ready, and it took a bit of time to decide. This solves the problems with both theories, as it would explain why it activated when it did, despite them not doing anything noteable to prove themselves at the moment, as well as why it didn’t activate right when they were in the same room.

The theory of Dreadbane’s arrival activating it makes sense as well. After all, it is possible that a new threat was enough to activate the Dragon Disk. And since Gemina seemed relatively peaceful, there may not have been a bad enough threat to activate the disk earlier. I personally believe this one, as if the Dragon Disk needs the Mysticons to activate it, then keeping it locked in the royal treasury would make it very unlikely for the disk to ever get activated. However, this doesn’t entirely disprove the previous theory, as whoever chose to keep it in the treasury may not have known how the dragon disk worked.

I wish that we got more explanation about the Dragon Disk worked. While it is possible to make theories, without knowing how the dragon disk works, it’s hard to know for sure how the Mysticons were chosen.

Why Arkayna’s family guards the Dragon Disk

Given the involvement that the Astromancers have with the Mysticons (it is mentioned in the chapter books that the original mysticons worked with the astromancers) I would have thought that the Dragon Disk would be held at the astromancer academy. There is only one reason I can think of to explain why Arkayna’s family had it, and that’s because Arkayna and Zarya are descendants of Imani Firewing, if not the original Mysticon Ranger as well. 

My theory is that Imani’s firewing’s next-of-kin managed to be allowed to protect the Dragon Disk, as it is important in the family. If the original Mysticon Ranger was related to Imani Firewing, just as Zarya is to Arkayna, then it would be even more likely for the family to obtain the Dragon Disk. The Astromancers probably allowed that, either because of sympathy (they knew how hard it must have been to see Imani battle Necrafa) or because they figured anyone stealing it would check the Astromancer Academy, but not a random house (considering that Arkayna’s ancestors took over the kingdom, it may have been possible that her family wasn’t royal at the time). 

One potential drawback to this theory is that Imani looks nothing like Arkayna or Zarya, but i don’t think that disproves the theory. Imani was alive 1,000 years before the series began (Em mentions the battle of victory heights being 1,000 years ago). Assuming a generation is 30 years, there would roughly be 33 generations between Imani and Arkayna and Zarya. And considering that only 50% of DNA is passed between each parent to their offspring, the amount of DNA Imani would share with her current descendants are very small, so it makes sense Imani doesn’t resemble them. 

Tl;dr: The reason Arkayna’s family has the Dragon Disk is that they’re descendants of Imani Firewing. The lack of resemblance doesn’t matter, as the timespan means that the DNA shared between them would be very small.

Is the Dragon Disk's Voice the Former Dragon Queen?

I heard a theory about how the Dragon Disk's voice is the former Dragon Queen (I forget where). I'll talk about it.

It is possible. The final fight with the Dragons of Light took place thousands of years ago, where the original Mysticons only came one thousand years before the series, so it's possible that the former queen could talk to the original Mysticons as the Dragon Disk. And there is is a large theme about dragons in the show, including the lead Mysticon being called "Dragon Mage", so it's possible.

One potential issue with it is the fact it was never mentioned. We got a lot of backstory about the Spectral Hand and the Dragons of Light, so if the Dragon Queen did become the Dragon Disk, we could likely know. However, this isn't proof that the queen's spirit isn't in the dragon disk. Most of the backstory came from the Spectral Hand's POV (through Proxima), so if the Spectral Hand doesn't know what happened to the Dragon Queen, neither would Proxima. And if King Valmauk didn't know what happened to his wife (which is possible, as he may not have been there whenever the Dragon Disk spoke), he couldn't tell the Mysticons.

In short, there isn't a lot to support this theory, but there's nothing strong to completely disprove it either.

Theory: If There Were A Fifth Mysticon, The Knockoff Dragon Disk Would be the Key to Unlocking Her

While I don't think a fifth Mysticon was ever intended, I think that if there would be one, the knockoff Dragon Disk would be the key to unlocking the fifth Mysticon's power.

My theory is that, if someone wanted to stop a fifth Mysticon from being chosen, they would make sure that the Dragon Disk wouldn't recognize a fifth Mysticon, modifying the Dragon Disk to do so. The knockoff Dragon Disk, on the other hand, was made without the main Dragon Disk, so it may not have that modification.

One reason this is possible is because we only see the main Dragon Disk choose the Mysticons. The main Dragon Disk was the one in the first episode, and in the alternate timeline, they used the original Dragon Disk. In both cases, as it wouldn't recognize the possibility of a fifth Mysticon, it would assume the four are all of the Mysticons.

The second reason is that the disk may only activate when all Mysticons touch the disk. Both times the Mysticons got powers from the Dragon Disk, they all touched it. And despite the disk being seemingly activated in the treasury, it did not give Zarya powers when she touched it. Also, Piper held the Dragon Disk in the alternate timeline, but didn't get powers until they all touched it. And Piper was told that she had to be the hero she was meant to be, but didn't mention the others, so just by following the line, the others didn't have to be Mysticons. However, if all of the Mysticons would have to touch the disk, then that explains why it didn't activate when Piper touched it after wanting to be a hero.

Now, there are explanations for both of these scenarios that doesn't involve all four of them needing to touch it. Zarya was wearing gloves, and as Piper wished for all of them not to be Mysticons, maybe she had to undo it so all of them became Mysticons. Still, the Dragon Disk theory would explain both, so it's possible.

While I admit the evidence isn't hard proof, they at least suggest that it would be possible. If the series continued, and they wanted a fifth Mysticon, this may be one possible way to explain it.

Mysticons Dragon Disk Poll

I put a poll out about how the Mysticons were chosen. As I do with many posts, I decided to make a post thinking about it.

Most people think that the Dragn Disk picked good heroes when the Mysticons were needed. This was the option I chose, but for reasons I'll get into later, I believe that the second most popular option is right. However, I can see why people chose this one. After all, Queen Goodfey says that they have to guard the Dragon Disk until new heroes are chosen, which sounds to me that the Dragon Disk will activate when it chooses heroes, not when heroes are being summoned. Also, this fits well with my theory of the Dragon Disk activating in times of need.

The second most popular theory, and the one I personally believe, is that the Dragon Disk chose the Mysticons when they were born. One big piece of evidence for this is the fact that the species of the original Mysticons match the current ones (e.g. Mysticon Dragon Mage is human both times). Also, this would explain why Arkayna and Zarya's family is expected to guard the Dragon Disk, as it could be something special to the family.

The third most popular theory was that the Mysticons were chosen when they show that they're capable heroes. I don't personally believe this one, simply due to when the Dragon Disk activated. While one could argue that Zarya and Piper sneaking into the palace shown their skills, the Dragon Disk activated a little late, and I doubt that if the show was doing this, they'd have Zarya and Piper prove themselves at the same time. The Dragon Disk activated after Queen Goodfey scolded Arkayna and Em for joking around, and unless the Dragon Disk found that funny enough to be worthy of powers, I doubt that's the case.

The least popular option was other. I didn't get an explanation as to what people who voted for this option thought, so I can't really make comments on it. However, it is possible that they were chosen by one of the methods listed above, but they had to be the same room as well. However, the Disk didn't activate right away, even when all the Mysticons were there.

I always discuss my theories on my blog, but I realized I never really put theories in a poll to see what others think. While I do have my theory, I will wait until the poll is done to mention mine, so I don't influence opinions.

Theory: Dreadbane's Arrival Caused the Dragon Disk to Activate

I have a theory that Dreadbane being ready to attack caused the Dragon Disk to activate. I will also be touching on an idea why, though there is an issue with the theory.

The reason I think Dreadbane's being ready to attack Drake City caused the Dragon Disk to activate is simple: those two events happened at the start of the series. It seems like a coincidence that both happened on the same time. Also, considering the fact that Dreadbane specifically wanted to steal the Dragon Disk, I believe that the disk may have activated due to it. Perhaps Dreadbane was enough of a threat to activate the Dragon Disk. And while Dreadbane was the weakest main villain for the Mysticons, he did cause plenty of issues (I mean, he almost caused a village to collapse) so maybe the Mysticons were needed to handle him. This is also shown by how Dreadbane was never permanently defeated by the Mysticons, as Necrafa threw him in a portal, then he felt sorry for himself after Necrafa rejected him and he was in his hideout.

It is also possible that the Dragon Disk activated because of Dreabane due to his connection to the Spectral Hand. Perhaps the evil from the Spectral Hand is enough to activate the Dragon Disk. As Dreadbane got close enough to the Dragon Disk, it activated. There is a potential problem with Captain Kaos, as he was influenced by the Spectral Hand but the disk didn't activate. Perhaps the Dragon Disk would only activate if it's close enough to the source whatever is influenced by the Spectral Hand, and Captain Kaos wasn't close enough.

In short, I believe that Dreadbane was the one who caused the Dragon Disk to activate. However, I'm not sure if it was because of the Spectral Hand, or due to Dreadbane simply being ready to attack that day (my previous post discussed that)

Merchandise Opportunities for Mysticons

I was thinking about different merchandise opportunties for Mysticons. I'm just going off of things I thought of, so I might miss some, and I won't be covering things already made, but it can be the same category (e.g. even though there's Mysticon books, I can discuss other books). Also, this is in no particular order.

BINKY: No, I don't think they should make an exploding toy. Still, a plush Binky would be cool. Perhaps it could even be a talking toy, with the sound of an explosion instead of actually exploding.

PIPER MERCHANDISE: This is for the chapter book and battle gear set that Piper didn't get, but the other Mysticons did. I think a chapter book would be best, as it would potentially give some backstory, but both would be good. The hoop would have to be smaller than in the show, but I feel that they did that with the battle gear set, so it shouldn't be a problem.

PIPER'S BACKPACK: I'm not putting this in the same category as Piper Merchandise, as this isn't something that the other characters got but not her. I think the backpack would be cool, and girls would like it.

THE CODEX: The Codex could be a book, with background information about the the Mysticons, both the current ones and the OG Mysticon. A cool idea would be to have each piece be seprate books, and the Codex is the box set. Each piece would discuss a different Mysticon (i.e. the blue Codex would talk about both Zarya and the OG Mysticon Ranger.

THE HAMMER OF HARMON: The Hammer of Harmon could be a book that ediscuses dwarvish culture in Gemina. After all, it's revealed that the Hammer of Harmon is a book (or rather, the Hammer of Harmon wrote a book).

THE DRAGON DISK: It may not do much (I considered putting it in things that wouldn't make good merchandise), but it may be good for pretending to be a Mysticon.

There is one thing that I thought wouldn't make good merchandise.

ZARYA'S BAG: It's a plain brown bag, so I don't think it will be appealing as merchandise.
