Revenge Beast Return Episode

The Mysticons and Proxima are hanging out at the Astromancer Academy. Zarya and Arkayna notice that Proxima seems distracted, and asks what’s wrong. Proxima reveals that some of the Astromancers don’t seem trust her due to the time Proxima put on the mask, as they lately are very quiet and secretive around her. Arkayna tells her not to worry about it, but Proxima reveals that their words are starting to get to her. To make Proxima feel better, Zarya tells Proxima about the time she accidentally became the Revenge Beast, showing that Proxima wasn’t the only one to let her emotions get the best of her. Zarya also tells her that, while it’s good to learn from past mistakes, they don’t define you. This seems to help Proxima. One Astromancer (one of the unnamed ones) was walking by and listens in on it, but neither the Mysticons or Proxima seems to notice.

Just as they are about to leave, the Astromancer introduces himself as Yakham, and asks for Zarya’s help with a project to improve the lives of people in the Undercity. Zarya agrees, due to her wanting to help the Undercity kids and believes that her Mom’s way is taking too long and thinking that she would be able to help the Astromancers give Proxima a chance. The other Mysticons offer to help as well, and Yakham suggests that they interview the kids in the city. Believing it will be an easy job, the Mysticons decide to split up to cover more ground.

Yakham leads Zarya to a meeting room and traps her inside it. He then uses Zarya to create a Revenge Beast identical to the one Zarya created. Zarya demands to know what Yakham is planning, and he reveals that, by having one of the Mysticons become a Revenge Beast, it may cause the public to not trust the Mysticons. Due to Proxima’s friendship with the Mysticons, as well as her past mistakes, it may lead to people doubting Proxima’s abilities as the Star Mistress, making it easier for Yakham to take over.

Meanwhile, Piper is interviewing people when the Revenge Beast comes. Piper recognizes the Revenge Beast as Zarya, and after a difficult escape, frantically calls the others. They meet back at the Stronghold, and wonder why the Revenge Beast came back. Em points out how Proxima said that some of the other Astromancers weren’t exactly nice to her, and Zarya may have became angered because of that and decide to risk the revenge spell again.

Arkayna, Em, and Piper look for the Revenge Beast. They find her, and realize that the Revenge Beast is attacking the city. The other Mysticons are saddened by this, as they wonder why Zarya wants revenge on the entire city.

Back at the Astromancer Academy, Zarya tries to break through the force field Yakham put over the door. While she isn’t able to do so, it does get the attention of Proxima, who does manage to break through the force field. Zarya tells Proxima everything that’s going on, and Proxima realizes that Zarya blames herself for what happened. Proxima tries to tell Zarya that it’s not her fault, but Zarya points out that, if she didn’t create the Revenge Beast the first time, this wouldn’t happen. Proxima tells Zarya that, as Zarya told her, past mistakes don’t define you. They decide to stop the Revenge Beast together.

As Malvaron and Doug make antidotes for the Revenge Beast, the Mysticons stop the Revenge Beast. During the fight, Zarya and Proxima come, and reveal what has happened. They manage to hold off the Revenge Beast until Malvaron and Doug comes with the potions. The other Astromancers come, and Yakham is arrested. Arkayna tells the other Astromancers that Proxima deserves to be treated better, and Gandobi says that they’re secretly planning for Proxima’s “Starda-“ before Qusarla quickly leaves, the other Astromancers following. The Mysticons and Proxima laugh, and Piper follows the Astromancers, asking if she can help plan Proxima’s secret star day party.

That night, Zarya has a dream turning into the Revenge Beast again and hurting Piper. She gets up and goes to the kitchen, where since it’s morning, the others are already awake. Zarya smiles, realizing that her friends are fine, and that the Revenge Beast she created is gone.

Was Malvaron ordered to bring the Mysticons to Nova Terron?

Malvaron told Arkayna that the Astromancers can help free her parents, which suggested that Malvaron wanted to ask the Astromancers for help, getting the Mysticons working for the Astromancers along the way. However, certain events made me believe that the main goal was getting the Mysticons to work for the Astromancers. 

It is implied (at least in the chapter book “Secret of the Fifth Mysticon”) that the original Mysticons worked with the Astromancers. While it’s possible that one of them needed the Astromancers’ help, the fact that Nova Terron was so quick to start training gave me the impression that he expected the new Mysticons.

My theory/head canon is that Malvaron was ordered to bring the Mysticons to the Astromancers, and thought that the best way to do so was to tell Arkayna that they can help her revive her parents. As the Astromancers made no attempt to do so, I am under the impression that it was never part of the plan. And as Malvaron didn’t seem surprised when Nova Terron chose to destroy the codex without keeping the promise, I feel as though he kind of expected that.

The fact that the other Mysticons were there supports this theory. While it’s unclear how much time passed between episodes 1 and 2, I will guess that the Mysticons didn’t have much time to bond, and therefore, neither Arkayna nor Malvaron would bring Piper and Zarya for support. However, if he wanted/was told to bring the Mysticons, he would bring all of them.

I also think it makes sense that Malvaron would manipulate Arkayna if the Astromancers wanted him to. He is shown to be loyal enough to the Astromancers to briefly side with them instead of helping Arkayna Dave her parents from the start. Even though he did change sides, the struggle was there. Considering he had less time to get to know the Mysticons, and therefore form a bond with them, I can completely see Malvaron doing whatever he can to follow Nova Terron’s orders.

However, I don’t think he was only for the Astromancers, even then. I think that Malvaron hoped he would have a role in the Mysticons’ training. That way, he would be able to help the Mysticons save the king and queen and keep his oath to the Astromancers.

Could one of the astromancers be the next main villain?

I’ve been thinking about Proxima being the Starmistress, and I realized that there are other Astromancers that Nova Terron could’ve chose. This made me wonder if one of the Astromancers would turn against Proxima and the rest of the Astromancers. 

It likely wouldn’t be Gandobi, since he seems loyal enough to Nova Terron to respect his decision. It would either be Quazala or one of the other Astromancers. I will use RA to mention the rogue astromancer.  

One of the Astromancers could resent Proxima’s leadership, either due to her age, jealousy, or her history with Necrafa’s mask. RA secretly plans an attack on Proxima, using magic to disguise himself.  The Mysticons investigate, and when they learn of the Astromancers identity, RA leaves the Astromancer Academy. RA’s main goal is to overthrow the Astromancers, but RA knows that it would be important to go against the Mysticons and the royal family as well, as they would stand behind Proxima. 

Proxima would be shaken up by the attack, and would feel as though she doesn’t belong as an Astromancer. However, she would know that she has a family with the Mysticons, and they would encourage her to keep her position. Depending on whether or not the other Astromancers think she is a good Starmistress, she would either gain their respect of learn that they did respect her.

Why Arkayna’s family guards the Dragon Disk

Given the involvement that the Astromancers have with the Mysticons (it is mentioned in the chapter books that the original mysticons worked with the astromancers) I would have thought that the Dragon Disk would be held at the astromancer academy. There is only one reason I can think of to explain why Arkayna’s family had it, and that’s because Arkayna and Zarya are descendants of Imani Firewing, if not the original Mysticon Ranger as well. 

My theory is that Imani’s firewing’s next-of-kin managed to be allowed to protect the Dragon Disk, as it is important in the family. If the original Mysticon Ranger was related to Imani Firewing, just as Zarya is to Arkayna, then it would be even more likely for the family to obtain the Dragon Disk. The Astromancers probably allowed that, either because of sympathy (they knew how hard it must have been to see Imani battle Necrafa) or because they figured anyone stealing it would check the Astromancer Academy, but not a random house (considering that Arkayna’s ancestors took over the kingdom, it may have been possible that her family wasn’t royal at the time). 

One potential drawback to this theory is that Imani looks nothing like Arkayna or Zarya, but i don’t think that disproves the theory. Imani was alive 1,000 years before the series began (Em mentions the battle of victory heights being 1,000 years ago). Assuming a generation is 30 years, there would roughly be 33 generations between Imani and Arkayna and Zarya. And considering that only 50% of DNA is passed between each parent to their offspring, the amount of DNA Imani would share with her current descendants are very small, so it makes sense Imani doesn’t resemble them. 

Tl;dr: The reason Arkayna’s family has the Dragon Disk is that they’re descendants of Imani Firewing. The lack of resemblance doesn’t matter, as the timespan means that the DNA shared between them would be very small.

How Doug and Malvaron Met

Doug and Malvaron began their training at roughly the same time. Malvaron comforted Doug when he was worried about beginning his training, and Doug took the blame for a prank Malvaron did. They soon became best friends, often sitting together during courses. 

This went on for years until Malvaron was given the opportunity to go to a more advanced level of the academy. Malvaron initially did not want to go, as he wanted to stay with Doug. However, Doug convinced Malvaron to go, as he knew Malvaron was bored in the beginner classes. 

They still stayed in touch, but due to their very different schedules, they didn’t hang out as much as either of them wanted. However, they do some things together, such as the Sad Minotaurs Concert.

Why I think the Mysticons Were Smart to Not Blindly Follow the Astromancers

I think the Mysticons were smart for not blindly following the Astromancers. And as I know I tend to look at look at complaints about the show, I thought I'd explore this.

The Astromancers aren't a very competent group. This is scene by how, while the Mysticons succeeded in missions, I can't think of one time where the Astromancers accomplished something without the Mysticons. And while that does make sense, as the Mysticons are the main characters, so they should have to save the world, not the Astromancers. However, their incompetence is seen in other ways, such as struggling to fly the ship and raise the dome (I know Proxima could, but in general, the Astromancers aren't competent)

It was also likely a hard choice for them to do so. As I mentioned in an earlier post, I believe that the Mysticons are expected to work with the Astromancers, as the OG Mysticons have done so. Also, they would probably have wanted an adult to trust, which would make it easier for them to see feel like they have to work with the Astromancers. And while they did work with them, instead of just accepting whatever the Astromancers told them, they thought for themselves.

I think they won't follow Proxima's leadership going forward, but for a different reason. I don't think Proxima would see herself as the boss of the Mysticons, both due to her age and guilt about the mask. Because of this, I imagine Proxima seeing her role more of a mission control. However, if she feels as though the Mysticons put themselves in too much danger, then she would scold them.

Who Would Send the Mysticons on Quests: Proxima or Queen Goodfey?

I was thinking about how I sometimes have Proxima send the Mysticons on quests, while other times, it's Queen Goodfey who sends the Mysticons on quests. This made me wonder who would be in charge of it if the series continued?

The issue is that, in the show, this wasn't an issue. Queen Goodfey was turned into a statue before they became Mysticons, so there was no way she could give quests. Because of this, the responsibility fell to the Astromancers.

Who is the current head of the Astromancers also would play a role. If Queen Goodfey was back to normal while the Astromancers and Mysticons still had a rocky relationship. However, now that the Mysticons and Astromancers get along, especially since Proxima is the Starmistress, they wouldn't necessarily go to the royal family.

One idea would be that the two of them handle different things. Larger issues that go though the Astromancers would be delivered through Proxima, while smaller issues that need investigated but not proven to be something dangerous would be done through Queen Goodfey.

If one option had to be done, it would be Proxima. The chapter books seem to imply that the OG Mysticons worked with the Astromancers, such as how Nova Terron mentioned Alpha Galaga helping to imprison Adakite. Also, I imagine that while Queen Goodfey would accept her daughters being Mysticons, it would be hard to send them on potentially dangerous missions.

In short, while I will continue to switch between both of them depending on the situation, if I had to choose one, it would be Proxima.
