I love Roy being 1/4 Ice Dragon (if his mom is Ninian, which seems to be a popular route) so much, so let's talk headcanons

The Binding Blade, due to specifically being made to target dragons, actually kind of hurts Roy whenever he uses it - it’s like a dull burning in his hands. He usually tries to ignore it, but it’s still one of the reasons he wears fingerless gloves

Physically there’s only a few dragonic traits: his ears aren’t pointed, but he does have small fangs and his nails grow real sharp real fast. He's kind of shy about them actually - he'll do things like cover his mouth if he's laughing too much or smiling too wide, and bite at his nails a lot

As far as he’s aware, he can’t transform at all. It makes him upset for more reasons than just the literal “cool factor”... he doesn’t know much about his mom aside from stories, and as an empathetic person who learns by experience and putting himself in others’ shoes he would’ve wanted to transform so he could grown closer to her in that way

One day, Robin and Corrin find out when they jokingly include Roy in their Manakete discussion and he completely overreacts

“Come on Corrin, why don’t you ask someone who actually counts as a dragon, like Zard or I dunno...” *looks around the room for the nearest person* “Roy? Heh-” *Roy drops his cup of water, face pale* “WHA- HOW DID YOU K N O W” “...Excuse me”

The two of them - especially a very excited Corrin - teach him about various aspects about Manaketes, including the different kinds of Dragonstones. Eventually they get him an Icestone and have him try it out...

And while he doesn’t fully transform, he partially does!! He gets the fins and tail of an Ice Dragon, the tips of his hair turn ice blue and he gets a bit of ice breath too!!!

Roy is absolutely ecstatic about this. He goes around shooting ice everywhere and people are super confused, and he brags about having both ice and fire abilities (though he can’t show them off simultaneously because yowch why does the Binding Blade hurt even more), and he even learns how to make snowcones fjdhfjdfj... and he feels a lot closer to Ninian too :>

the sword and the stone

a.k.a. i felt like rambling about some small headcanons regarding dragonson roy and the sword of seals as continued from this small plot ramble ages ago.

so like i mentioned in the previous link: in this version of events Roy classes up twice - once in Arcadia into a minor Dracolord when he’s able to consolidate his dragon heritage into a small, small dragonstone that he’s able to use to enhance his attacks; and once into a Great Lord when he receives the Sword of Seals and makes it his own by changing it into the Wyrmbound/Dracobound blade. 

i’ve seen headcanons and speculations about the Sword of Seals rejecting Roy because of his dragon blood, and that’s painful and delicious and also a very valid fear for Roy to have if he ever did know his ancestry. it’s a headcanon that i love. but also I can’t help but think about how the sword seemed to be sentient and changed according to its wielder’s desires - it changed when Hartmut wanted to spare the Dark Dragon and not kill it, and since it showed Roy those very same memories it makes me think it wouldn’t reject Roy for such a reason, especially when Roy expresses the wish for dragons and humans to live together in peace the way they do in Arcadia, and such. 

that being said, Roy and crew do receive a scare when he gets the sword and Roy feels the desire to smash his own dragonstone with it, like the sword is asking Roy to do such a thing. they all wonder if it is rejecting him, but Roy can feel a gentle warmth from the sword and not the burning, harsh sensation that the other Divine Weapons gave when he touched them, so he does it. the sword absorbs the shattered remnants of his stone when he does that, which means now that the sword can act as a channeler for his dragon blood the same way the stone does, but with its own power in the mix responding to Roy’s wishes (to be able to prove himself as a worthy leader of this group even with his heritage, to stop Zephiel’s maddened desires from destroying the world even after his death, to bring everything to a peaceful end) Roy’s able to accentuate his dragon powers with it and that’s why his ranged attack suddenly involves him turning into a dragon as opposed to just throwing fire with his sword.

but it has another side effect too. now there’s always going to be a part of Roy and his memories inside that sword, much like how Hartmut’s memories were sealed inside as well. it contains his will, and instead of it being like...a familiy heirloom when he dies, or it being sent back to Bern to be locked up in the temple again, Roy’s will requests it to be sent...to Arcadia. to give it to the (potentially still recovering) Idunn. 

because dragons have long lives, and they heal slowly, especially from deep scars like this. 

because in that sword lies the wills of the three men that one way or another saved Idunn from her many years of darkness. 

Hartmut, who saved her by putting her to sleep rather than kill her.

Zephiel, who saved her by waking her from that dark slumber and gave her a purpose to live for.

And Roy, who saved her by freeing her from that purpose and giving her a chance to simply live. 

because Idunn is a symbol of what humanity drove dragons to do to their own kind in desperation.

because the sword of seals was once a symbol of what humans did to drive themselves and dragons apart.

because the sword of seals now imbibes the will of three men who, in their own ways, all tried to do the best for the world they lived in. 

and giving it to idunn to safekeep, for her to use, seems like the best way to represent those dark parts of history that should never be forgotten, and the future that still has a chance to walk forward into the light.
