thinkin abt how nonsensical the official dragon stats are again
Concerning Stats for My OC Dragon Species
So I was making a collage for my OC dragon species — and then I realized something.
Should I write the stats omnisciently for our convenience? Or should I write the stats according to the POV of the Riders — which is basically very, very little? Like with the Night Fury (before Toothless)? Or maybe a little bit of both?
Still wondering why Night Furies have such a high armor stat. For a few years I thought “Oh, maybe they’re like, taking their speed, agility, and stealth into consideration or something like that....? Since they’re so hard to actually hit?” but then I realized no wait. That would be pretty strange, and they don’t seem to be doing that with any other dragon species so??? Why the hell is it 18 instead of something that actually makes sense like 7 or 8?????
And while I’m on the topic of Night Fury stats, their firepower should totally be 18 or 19 instead of 14. Never got why it was so low especially since they’re willing to give them an 18 in armor of all things.....
Okay but. What if the Night Fury stats actually made sense
Attack: 15 Speed: 20 Armor: 8 Firepower: 18 Shot Limit: 12 Venom: 0 Jaw Strength: 6 Stealth: 18
Explanation: Still not really sure what “Attack” is supposed to actually mean (Is it how dangerous their method of attacking is? Is it maybe their physical strength/abilities? Who knows.) but 15 seems good so I left it alone. The canon speed, venom, jaw strength, and stealth stats are also fine, nothing to say about them. Armor I changed from 18 to 8, because sorry but why tf does the species based around speed and stealth have such a high armor stat??? Night Furies don’t even look like they’re covered in tough looking scales, so I mean? Why. Anyway, Firepower I changed from 14 to 18 because idk about y’all but that seems more fitting considering just how powerful a Night Fury’s blasts have been shown to be. Shot limit I also changed from 6 to 12 because Toothless seemed to have around that in the first and second films (though in the second you could say it was due to him going into that glowy/supercharged state).
Also! Northern Night Fury stats!
I'm liking your revised Fury stats; Northerns might be a shade less agile (e.g. hairpin turns & braking) given the chonk, but that's more of a handwave on my part. As for 'Attack', given what the other categories cover it might as well be 'Strength' or 'General Offense' (e.g. claws, thagomizers, sheer bulk...).
Oh yeah I imagine Northerns are definitely less agile/maneuverable than Commons (just gonna call canon/regular NFs Common NFs for now), but are basically just as fast which is why I kept the speed stat the same lol.
That’s what makes the most sense to me, which makes me wonder if I should give Night Furies a lower attack stat….hmm.
Given some of the stuff we see Toothless tank (and shield Hicccup from) in 1 & 2, I could see a *proportionately* high armor rating for (southern) Furies, but, chart-topping? Better-protected than Gronckles or Boneknappers? Nope.
Yeah, it is true that Toothless has had some pretty bad crash landings and remained relatively unscathed so tbh maybe an armor stat of 11 or 12 would be more appropriate than 7 or 8. I just personally like the idea of Night Furies having a lower armor stat than most other dragons because it fits more with the whole stealth bomber thing and helps make it so they’re not like, great when it comes to basically everything lol. (At the very least they shouldn’t have an armor stat that’s 6 more than a Rumblehorn’s. Like. what)
Rumblehorns weigh less than Night Furies...
... Terrible Terrors are six feet long with a wingspan of six feet...
So if I were to lay down next to one, it would be longer than me... but they didn't look that long when 15-year-old Hiccup was with them... hmmmm
