Dancing Toothless (party version)

Over the 15 or so years I've been drawing, I've taken inspiration from lots of different artists and styles and integrated them into my own. I decided to do a little study. I picked a still from HTTYD (shown at the end) and re-drew it in 8 influential styles. This took me about a month to do.

Which one is your favorite?

Tetsuya Nomura- Probably the first recognizable styles I tried to emulate. Nomura is most well known for the character designs for the Kingdom Hearts series. The eyes are the most recognizable from this style.

Hisaya Nakajo- Hisaya Nakajo, author of Hana-Kimi, was one of my first inspirations. As a manga artist, most of her work is black lines with screen tones.

Yoshitaka Amano- The main concept artist for the Final Fantasy series. His work is much more soft and sketchy than I portrayed. Most of his works are with pastel colors and light pencil lines. The eyes of course are very noteworthy.

Noboteru Yuki - Notable artist behind The Vision of Escaflowne and Record of Lodoss War, Yuki’s style was one of the most iconic anime styles of the 80’s.

David Mazzuchelli - A lesser known comic artist from the 90’s, Mazzuchelli’s work was more simple in lines, often looking more like thick sharpie marks than the thin lines of other comics. His color work was the stand out for me, having textured flats with highlights. He is well known for Batman Year One, and Daredevil.

Kenneth Rocafort- A current comic artist for DC, Rocafort drew me in by the shape of eyes, nose, and lips of his characters. I drew a lot of inspiration from him for his anatomical work and the way he depicts hair.

Milt Kahl- Kahl is one of the famous early animators for Disney. He’s most well know ln for his ‘head swaggle’ where he’d have a character speak and move their head back and forth at the same time. While he’s most well known for animation, I did draw a lot of inspiration from the early Disney movies, especially Sleeping Beauty. He was the character designer for Prince Phillip.

Charles Dana Gibson- One of the more unique influences on this list, Gibson is a turn of the century ink master who is famous for his ‘Gibson Girl’ illustrations. His style is distinct while still being realistic.

My 'style' which relies more on painting than line work.

"Every body knows how to train a dragon!!" Factually incorrect. Dragons georg, who knows how to train dragons in 10,000 different ways, is an outlier and should not have been counted

It's been said before but the constant theft of Fishlegs' traits and giving them to Hiccup to make him a more appealing nerd just bc you find him hot is frankly appalling.

I know nobody likes fat characters but did you even watch the movie in which there is an entire scene of Fishlegs listing perfectly accurate dragon stats off the top of his head in rapid succession whereas Hiccup was frolicking in fields with toothless.

Out of the two of them Hiccup is not the bookworm memorizing dragon facts. He didn't even actually read the book of dragons, not thoroughly he read the first few pages and skimmed the rest (he hadn't even gone out of his way to read it prior to dragon training despite how Badly he wanted to be a dragon killer!). he learns best by experience, he is not sitting down to read for hours he's writing down scrambled notes based on field observations while Fishlegs is polishing them so they're actually legible are we fucking fr rn.
