So I managed to save enough tickets to be able to finish the route today during the x3 lucky time (and also last night I was too sleepy to play the game so I also used the free tickets during the lucky time).
My personal criteria for judging would be the following:
1.) Did it make me learn more about the character in a way that makes sense and is entertaining?
2.) Was the flow of the story okay? Were there any moments that I found cringey (and was it because of what actually happened or was it the way it was handled by the writers)?
3.) Overall did I fall in love with the character?
You will notice that I didn't put historical accuracy as part of the criteria and my reason is that the premise of Ikevamp already places players in a fantasy setting with historical figures. From my end at least I already know that this is a fantasy not a history lesson.
I'm going to do my best to be concise so I don't waste your time. Since it is still fresh in my mind I might include some spoilers to illustrate points.
And my answers are as follows:
1.) Actually yes, I was startled by how I was also captivated by Jean in his route and he had become more appealing. Before playing his route I saw him as a background character that was there to serve as a reminder that not everyone in the mansion whole heartedly loves Le Comte or to serve as a supporting figure to Napoleon or Mozart. There's nothing inherently wrong with this but he didn't really stand out and blended in the background. In contrast to Theo in Arthur's route or even Mozart in Jean's route, they are supporting characters who in their own way don't blend in the background but still gives support to the main love interest.
But now in his route and getting to know him better and why he has a dark outlook in the world and in contrast to the saint figure we are always fed with in mainstream media, he is in my view a leading man. However players may not immediately feel this way at the start of his route, but there comes a point in the story wherein the MC becomes his writing teacher and to me that's when Jean the leading man slowly begins to emerge. One of my favorite parts is the mini arc with Saar, a little boy who became a thief to provide for his family. To those who are patient enough to finish his route, you will at the very least get a deeper look at Jean the leading man.
I could see some similarities between him and Vincent (some but not a lot), wherein there is someone who doesn't feel emotions the same way others do because of a past trauma that they may not be fully aware about. But having said that Vincent's route is also really different since he actively wants to be with the MC (initially as a friend) and to remind her that she's not alone. Jean on the other hand is like MC's project and it is she who actively does most of the "courting" or most of the work. This isn't necessarily bad since the whole point of his route is about him learning to forgive himself and to begin living.
In other words: Yes, it made me learn more about him and I found myself drawn to him.
2.) I have some issues with the flow of the story. It was okay up until the action parts with Giles which was a mess to me. It could have been handled better (a good third arc action and suspense that I would use as an example is in Theo's route with Gauguin). I think the writers were struggling how to build up the mysterious figure that we definitely don't know about (its Dracula) and how to handle the third arc action sequence that would make it different from other routes. It was honestly in this area that I wish was revised or maybe if there was more time to add suspense leading up to one confrontation with Giles, then it might have been better.
Like maybe have Giles doubt what Shakespeare is saying or doubt if it really is Jean since he is partially at least mentally ill wherein he becomes attached to anyone who closely resembles Jean but only later realize that personality wise they are different from Jean.
Having said that, the route overall is good but it is a bit slower than the other routes of Ikevamp. But maybe its also because unlike the other routes it is the MC who primarily does the courting here moreso than in any of the previous routes. It may not be a good route for those who don't like routes which tend to be draggy.
3.) Now the question that has the most weight among all the questions: Did I fall in love with Jean?
As of now I would say yes, its one of he reasons why I chose the dramatic route ending (the sex scene was not as descriptive as Napoleon's or Arthur's [in his romantic ending] but in my opinion it still worked. It actually reminded me of some of the sex scenes in Ikesen which are still tasteful or teasing but it cuts to black for the actual sex). I now at least appreciate him more than before doing his route. The reason why I say "As of now" is because I want to check up how I feel about him in a few months. I was in love with Vincent after finishing his dramatic route, but right now I see him more as a friend. Of all the routes I've done so far, I'm still in love with Arthur, Mozart, and Isaac (Theo is a fun ride but he's more of a friends with benefits partner to me or a sexual partner to explore sex with if you're not ready for commitment). So we shall see in May (feel free to send an ask on how I feel about him after Beltane).
Overall if you are patient, this is a nice route. If you want a number score with 10 being the highest, I would put it at 8.
Small disclaimer/spoiler if you have not read Sasuke/Yukimura routes and you do not know of the unrequited love........
but I LOVE how on both routes, they are each others unrequited loves to MC 🤧🥺 i LOVE these two besties/bros and their relationship 🥺
