A couple of weeks ago, my auntie saw me going around with a really old tattered plastic bag containing my crochet, and because she is an extremely creative person, she asked me why I didn't make myself a pretty bag, especially since I am so talented at using my hands to make pretty things. I have to admit I had never thought about that, probably because I have never been good at sewing, because sewing machines have a tendency to stop working when I approach, and because I have never made a bag in my life. However, the idea intrigued me greatly, I love these handmade bags for laundry, and now I loved the idea of pretty little bags, in my bag, containing my crochet-on-the-go. So, being no idle person, and since I enjoy seeing what I can make (only when they turn out pretty though), I thought I'd give it a try.
My family, aka my aunt (other aunt, the aunt of which horror stories are made of) and uncle own their own shirt making business, and as such they always have fabric scraps around the place. I asked them for a few scraps, since my original idea was to make a patchwork bag, and went back home with some seriously nice fabric, not pattern wise, but material wise: 100% cotton, lush.
It's taken me while to actually start working on this bag, mostly because when I got back from Italy (where my family is), I had to work everyday from 10am till 9pm, leaving me no time to do anything else but drag my feet at home at the end of the day. Eventually I quit, the boss's wife insulted me, and that was the last straw of abuse I would take from them (but this is another story), and because Karma is great and powerful, I got ill a couple of days after leaving that place. For 3 days I wondered the house like a man with a minor cold (yes, this is meant to be mean towards all men who make a huge deal out of very minor illnesses), sleeping and watching stuff on my trusted laptop. Today, however, I felt a little bit better, and I wanted to make things, so I thought it would be a great day to try and make my crochet-on-the-go bag. I found a really good tutorial [here], but since I don't own a sewing machine I hand stitched everything.
I am not good at stitching, as you can probably tell by the photo, I am sure I did more that a couple mistakes while making it, and it's sort of whobbly, but you know what? I couldn't care less. I really like it, I am proud of myself for making something I thought I would never be capable of doing, and I want to make more. Also, I really want a sewing machine now, a cheap one would be a good start, but I don't have the money (nor the job to afford one). I guess I have something new to try and work towards now, so if you want to help me refine my skills, as I'm sure you do, why don't go check out my Etsy Shop. It's pretty cool, if a bit bare, but I promise I am working on more projects!
