System-of-Systems Approach to UAS Integration.
Imagine if long-haul trucking companies, mail couriers, and firefighters had to build their own roads to deliver their services to the public. Imagine if each airline had to commission and maintain navigation aids and build its own airports.
Requiring each participant in a transportation system to bring their own infrastructure isn’t scalable. Yet this is what commercial UAS operators face today if they want to conduct advanced drone operations.
Without any shared-use infrastructure to connect drone flights to a common system, high-value drone use cases remain grounded.

New FAA Restrictions on Drone Flights Over U. S. Landmarks
There will be new drone flight restrictions taking effect on October 5, 2017 over 10 Department of the Interior (DOI) landmark sites. These new restrictions have been requested by U.S. national security and law enforcement agencies.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the (DOI) have agreed to restrict drone flights up to 400 feet within the lateral boundaries of the following landmarks:
Statue of Liberty National Monument, New York, NY
Boston National Historical Park (U.S.S. Constitution), Boston, MA
Independence National Historical Park, Philadelphia, PA
Folsom Dam; Folsom, CA
Glen Canyon Dam; Lake Powell, AZ
Grand Coulee Dam; Grand Coulee, WA
Hoover Dam; Boulder City, NV
Jefferson National Expansion Memorial; St. Louis, MO
Mount Rushmore National Memorial; Keystone, SD
Shasta Dam; Shasta Lake, CA
There is already a list of no-fly zones which include major sports stadiums, major airports, national parks and some army bases.
There are exceptions that can be made to this new restriction but they must be coordinated with the FAA on a case to case basis. For more information about these restrictions go to the FAA’s UAS website. They will also have links regarding the restrictions in the FAA’s B4UFLY mobile app.
Anyone violating these restrictions may be subject to criminal charges and civil penalties.
