It was late at night in Bucegi National Park. The temperature had plummeted along with the sun, the landscape of the park now illuminated in silvery detail by the moon, silhouetting the mountains against the night sky.
This was our third night spent staking out the bears, huddling in blankets with our noses pressed against the windscreen, torch and camera at the ready.
We’d had no luck so far, not even a sign apart from some overly large paw prints in the mud.
The air was silent apart from the barking of stray dogs and the passing of cars who had presumably also come in search of bears, but were inadvertently scaring them away by doing so.
It was the same old story as our last visit here, during which time we’d had a conversation with one of the drunken shepherds who roamed the park.
We’d asked him, via Google Translate, whether the bears had ever eaten his sheep, to which he’d enthusiastically replied, “𝘋𝘢!” before making a hasty escape with one of our lighters and a bottle of IPA.
So here we were again, trying our luck for the second time, waiting with freezing hands and baited breath. We’d strategically chosen a spot between the forest and the river, not too far from the bins, and we’d even left some berries and a chunk of meat outdoors to entice the bears over.
Unfortunately our third consecutive stakeout was over before it had really begun; the sky darkened and the heavens opened, washing away our hopes along with any chance of seeing a bear in the downpour.
We went to bed, defeated, but still with a glimmer of hope that we might have one last chance to see a bear, as we had one more location to try before we gave up altogether...
