And the animals emerge. A day after storms slammed us against the coastline running back home, a beautiful calm settles in Gloucester. In every direction, the whales rise for breaths. The bursting explosive spouts tower above. The thermal camera mounted drone zips towards the immense humpbacks to capture a glimpse of them in infrared. We intently listen to their cacophonous breaths and watch them from the sky. Somewhere between reading Richard Connor’s new book, hours coding videos, and restless dream-laden slumber, something clicks. No pun intended. My eyes re-focused and memory reappraised. Within the most calamitous of dolphin bashes, displays and flipper touches emerge at the transitions of some disorderly ordered dance. All attention broken momentarily, they split and scatter into aimless chaos. Then with that familiar and eerie synchronicity of truly social creatures, all rostrums align at once. The Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 is sunny and full of so much life. I feel the island roots here in the colloquialisms and culture. The dolphin entered the channel at the back of St. George’s Caye one calm morning. It started its search for breakfast near the other edge of this dredged waterway/local marine mammal hole of choice. It swam by us and past the dock at the ECOMAR station accompanied by the raucous excitement-laden screams of Urbano telling us where it had surfaced. A herd of six Antillean manatees travel across seagrass flats in the late evening near St. George's Caye in Belize. They moved across many kilometers over the hour we followed them with our small drone. The group zig zagged across patchy shallow waters. Some animals lagged behind but eventually they clustered, rubbing pectorals and changing course for some greener pastures. Sped up 4X.
