My fleece and spindles arrived!
...so im writing up a little guide for how to learn to spin on a drop spindle, bc my friend wants to learn and physical distance means i can’t teach it in person -_-
my little guide has somehow already gone over 4000 words and has 5 mspaint diagrams, most of them quite detailed
Tour de Fleece plans...
Hot diggity damn! The fleece I tried so hard to get two years ago but for various reasons couldn't was finally back in stock. Grabbed the last 8 oz of it and a couple of new drop spindles (because I seem to collect these now like i do other things lol) and I now am hoping it all will get here BEFORE July 5th when TdF starts!
"A Song of Wool and Silk - Mother of Dragons"
Kromski drop spindles (I got 1 walnut, 1 mahogany)
So delighted Paradise Fibers had it back in stock!!! If you guys are looking for a good place online for all your knitting/crochet/weaving/spinning needs, check them out! They've saved my neck a couple of times for parts for my spinning wheel and they have great yarn and fleece!
I have in to temptation and ordered two new spindles.
One is mid weight, one is little and lace weight.
I blame all of the enablers. Now I need to go stare at fiber. And remind myself not to buy it all.
Join us for Spin Together!
Spin Together is an international celebration (with a little competition) of hand spinning! For the week of Feb 17-24, you spin whatever you want - as much as you can. Your totals are tallied with your team, and prices (electronic gift cards) are distributed to winners in a variety of categories. You can read all the deals on the Spin Together website.
If you're looking for a team, Griffin Dyeworks Spinners has space for you!
Many of us are historical re-enactors - but not all of us.
Many of us spin on hand spindles for the week - but not all of us.
Many of us are in Southern California - but not all of us!
We have a FB group and Discord, daily (non required) check ins, and welcome spinners of all skill levels. We're not in it to win it - we all set our own personal goals. My goal is usually to spin a little every day - I usually get between 40-300 yards completed. Our most prolific hand spinner gets 2000 yards! One year my goal was to spin a different type of fiber every day. It was really fun and educational putting deliberate focus on my spinning, which I usually don't do.
I hope you'll consider joining us this year! There's a $15 reg fee, which I can cover for you if needed.

I need help! I impulse purchased a couple of drop spindles from an antique mall, but neither have whorls or hooks. Can I use them without those? Do I need to jury-rig a whorl and hook, or is there another way?
Made a couple of drop spindles today! I figured out that all it was is a wooden toy car wheel, 1/4 inch dowel, and a cup hook. I dyed mine because I wore the paint off the one I bought. Then they're treated with beeswax for shine and protection.
Mine are also just a hair longer.
Wish me luck, I’m printing a drop spindle I got off Thingiverse and this will be my first official print understanding how it all works and getting all the slicing technical stuff sorted out.
