As I read @drownedindeniall​‘s incredible bigbang fic, I ended up documenting my initial thoughts so I wouldn’t forget anything. For anyone who hasn’t read it yet, you really should! 

I haven’t edited this (other than putting the quotes in italics), so you can read my unfiltered stream of consciousness. The capitalisation and grammar is all over the place, plus there’s some swearing, but I think anyone who’s read it can relate! It’s quite long so I put it under the cut and be warned this does contain SPOILERS. Hopefully y’all will enjoy my thoughts! This is mainly for you Jenn  😘

“this world is built on the back of death and destruction” - See this sentence right here is what i was talking about!! this story is so multifaceted and works on so many different levels - as shrek said, this fic is like an onion-it has layers

God, this is deeper than the mariana trench. i didn’t come here to start analysing my thoughts about love and fate and predestination. what i love about your writing is that it transcends past just these characters too

I just want to say that the craftsmanship of this is astonishing. I’ve said some stuff on AO3 but I’m constantly thinking of more to compliment. I’m so impressed by the incorporation of the Dark Tower series into the world of 1d. It can be really difficult to amalgamate two worlds without compromising on characterisation. I felt like everyone was true to themselves, despite the AU. That is hard to do, so honestly I am in awe.. 

Gotta talk about the imagery as well!!! I quoted bits and pieces up there but my word was the description gorgeous! The sentences were crafted so beautifully that they took my breath away. 

Like I said before, this is definitely a piece of writing that I will revisit. I can tell once I reread it, I’ll be clamouring for more answers about x, y & z! I highly recommend that everyone gives this a try.

i was hoping for an excuse to talk about penguins today ;) 

1. favorite fic overallOnce In A Lifetime nobody who has ever asked me for a fic rec before is surprised. 

“Yeah. I should quit here too. Just…on a night like this. Standing outside, fresh snow. Having you here. Feels like…electric, you know? Feels infinite. To just stand here and smoke and exist.”

Harry nods. And then he reaches out and pulls Niall into a hug. Because he wants Niall as close to him as possible. He doesn’t want to let him go, and he doesn’t have to. Maybe there’s not a universe where he has to let Niall go.

this is a canon div fic that presents itself as an AU, which is super trippy until this moment happens and niall shatters the fourth wall. there’s another him, there’s another world where he does the exact same thing, he’s probably told harry the exact same thing before. whatever verse it is, niall’s probably the same good dude. magical realism accepts the uniqueness of its universe as simple fact, which this fic can’t do, so breaking the fourth wall and pulling it off was a tricky bit of good writing. 

2. something unique they bring to their fic

He feels exhausted and he doesn’t want to think. He shuts his eyes tight and listens to the mechanical lullaby from the next room. Lets it sing him to sleep.

i talked a lot about di’s power to transmute human life nad infuse everyday objects with a quasi-state of being, and jenn does it too, just on a slightly smaller scale. it makes both writers’ fics alive in really interesting ways!

3. three awesome lines/dialogue/passages

“Nah. Like Q-A-D-A-R. Qadar. It’s like fate, kind of. Like divine destiny.”

i love when writers pay homage to zayn’s heritage in fic and it really kindly and thoughtfully, which this does. 

There’s a bird that lives inside of Niall’s ribs, that occupies his middle. He knows it and understands it. Kind of. Just enough. It’s something he checks in with, like a touchstone. When he used to visit a therapist, back in the beginning when he was having trouble with the crowds and the travel and the confined spaces, she would ask him the same questions over and over.

really illustrative language like this is so, so nice to run across bc we’re always wanting to understand our narrators deeper, better, get closer to their hearts, and this visual for me is so soft and sinewy and anxious. my lit prof would’ve called writing like this indirect, the way a sailboat tacks into the wind bc it’s not blowing exactly the way they want, which @nialljustgotwet and @wepush do too!

“It’s so easy to see it as a mistake, you know? Like something that’s broken. But it’s not. It’s progress. It’s forward movement.” He links his arm with Niall’s and pulls him along, back toward the base. Toward the mud and the machinery and the smell of dryer sheets and frying oil and PVC pipes. “It’s just nature perfecting itself.”

a good example of a lot of layers in a little bit of writing. there’s the human world of the characters, separate from the mechanical world they’re returning to, and then the natural world, which the ppl are both a part of and studying as though apart. the really interesting latent question, of course, is whether perfection is in graduating from the natural world or empathizing with it. i lOVE when there’s a ton of stuff going on in one little bit of writing. 

4. what are their strengths? (ie: dialogue, characterization, plot, diction, etc)

HUMAN CONNECTION. which i know sounds kind of ~~ when i just talked about imbuing non-human things with a semblance of humanity in order to filter every aspect of the fic through the reality of the narrator’s eyes, but there u have it. 

Harry has to laugh at that. At how patently untrue it is. He’s grown close to five centimeters and gained something like six inches of hair. Lost the baby fat. His face is longer. Thinner. More defined. He looks in the mirror now and sees an adult human, not the perpetually surprised face of an infant, all pink lips and flushed cheeks and wild curls. Not the boy he used to be. He wonders if Zayn is looking at him now and seeing that boy, the way Harry can see the boy Zayn used to be.

like the poet wrote, I get knocked down, I get up again over and over and over again.

5. why is their style compelling?jenn makes everything a little bit more human. 

6. what would you love to see them do next? (prompts, genres, etc)A REALLY CHEESY AU. like one tree hill/grey’s anatomy/idk i’m about 10 yrs out of date on tv shows kind of au, bc i’m sure jenn could find a way to make it interesting again. 

7. what other writers do you recommend based on similarities?di @wepush writes so so similar to jenn. characters exist in relation to each other bc they see themselves through each others’ eyes which is such a lovely thing, bc i think our good friends always see us as the best versions of ourselves. we should be so lucky as to see ourselves that way.

Apartment hunting is a draaaaaag and I feel for you. But finding the right one is so exciting. <3

Honestly I think my complaining is also a little disproportionate. Granted I am looking at 2-4 a day at this point and everyone has turned me down so far but like, I’ve never had to find one in New York or like Hong Kong and I am also in a position where I am not turned down because of race/ethnicity/immigration status and have the resources and don’t have any pressure to move out. I get turned down because I am a student. 

I’m just doing it for the first time and have to kinda ignore my university requirements because it takes up a lot of time. Also I like to complain, it’s all part of the process and also I am german and if there’s one thing germans are good at it’s complaining.

I can’t WAIT to find one. Honestly I hope I find something nice that I’ll enjoy living in and decorating and stuff.

Our friends in New York got a great deal on a recent crime scene apartment and knew exactly what happened (it was grisly). At the end of the day, I think it depends on your comfort level and whether the creepiness is a deal breaker.

In New York that sounds like they got lucky! Honestly this one is at the top limit for me in terms of price and its fairly big, which I don’t really need. I don’t know honestly I think I’ll apply and see what happens, I probably won’t get it anyway.
