It's the worst weather here right now, and what do we do in the worst weather? We spin!!

This was made as a drum carding practice. I obtained a bag full of super soft merino wool commercial top roving pieces in all colours of the rainbow. Carded 5 batts using different techniques. The yarn has a slight gradient.

This is 170m/70g. 330g remain in my merino rainbow bag.

I learned:

Ink blue is a VERY DOMINANT colour in optical blending

Horizontal aligning of differences does fuck all in a batt since I tear off horizontal pieces for spinning...

Rather do some more blending for a gradient than less

Highlights get eaten by the spinning process. The resulting yarn always looks more dull than the batt

Splotchy highlights done with a contrast colour can preserve though!

I will eventually knit this into some sort of landscape beanie one day :) stay tuned!

my guild bought a drum carder recently, and brought it to our meeting yesterday for people to play with! this, delightful, combined with the destash event at the meeting, so there were tables of people’s unwanted fibre to card up.

here’s my first attempt at carding a batt, from a number of solid-colour Merino tops (and a teensy bit of something blue that might have been Gotland)! i am… i have to be honest with you, i’m utterly charmed by it and now desperately want a drum carder and to maybe make these for sale because!! look at it!!!! look!!!!

First attempts at blending for sock yarn: moderate success?

Working from cleaned BFL locks (with thanks to a sheep named Hope) and silk top?sliver? I've now got 25g of an 80/20 blend. The silk isn't quite as mixed in as I'd hoped but also it turns out there's a limit to how many times I'm willing to rework/recard fibre to try to get a smoother blend. And to be fair this is my first attempt lol

The BFL was relatively clean with only a bit of hay, no burrs, and no second cuts. I did discover I need to flick or comb the tips open since there seems to be a bit of sunburn/mud combo that wants to turn into slubby lumps on the carder. Picture absolutely does not do justice to how much sparkle both of the fibres contribute to this blend.

Hopefully I'll experiment with spinning this tomorrow, though I will draft it out a bit finer with my diz to make it easier to get a smooth draw. After I prep the other hundred grams I'm definitely going to mark this type of project as for winter/bad air days; it's time consuming.
