Finally got to near Arc 3 Whale Fight in the LN and omg Ricardo really runs up to Subaru and says "Anastasia is a friend-less anti-social money obsessed capitalist wanna be her friend I'm getting worried for her" I would literally die if I was Anastasia here. Dad disses you then tries to get you a friend immediately. How will she survive the react to this?
I think the funniest part of this is that it’s not even the first time it happens: Rom did the EXACT SAME THING in a failed loop in Arc 1, a good chunk of Roswaal’s conversation in the bath with Subaru was him saying “The twins need more friends, so please do your best :)” and Ram was kind of doing the same thing with Rem early on. Subaru just gives off “friendly neighbor’s kid” vibes apparently. Whenever he forms even a passing acquaintanceship with someone who has a person around Subaru’s age in their life with trouble making friends, they decide to try convincing Subaru to hang out with them. This is a pattern at this point.
While this would be a far-flung future before you touch Arc 4, what would be your plans on the cast's reaction to Subaru's first trial? I just watched the audio commentary of that episode where Rie Takahashi bawled her eyes out and just remembered your fanfic of yours.
Sure I can give you some notes about that:
Begins very fluffy, ends in devastation
Reinhard is beyond delighted to see Natsuki Kenichi, because it “confirms” the assumption he’s had since the start: that Subaru came from an entire world full of Natsuki Subarus.
Anastasia is extremely invested in this world from Beyond the Great Waterfall. She is more interested in the technology surrounding them than she is in Subaru’s family life.
(This soon becomes her actively trying to distract herself and others from what is clearly a Very Personal Set Of Memories actually.)
The idea that Subaru gave up and holed himself up in his room for months like that is met with utter bewilderment because it does not fit with their impression of even the Subaru who first arrived in Lugunica at all. It’s not even a matter of him being lazy or not wanting to improve because he fully dove into his work as a manservant the moment he had the chance, so — it’s pretty clear from the very start that Something Else is going on, here.
Everyone’s impressions of Subaru’s parents are pretty varied. They’re not gonna see them as the Perfect Parents or anything, and different characters will have different ideas about what they should have done or w/e, but they’re all gonna understand that Subaru’s parents wanted what was best for him and loved him very, very much.
Ricardo, Rom, and Wilhelm are all particularly devastated by Subaru’s conversation with his parents, because they all have children of their own.
Subaru ends up completely bawling when it finally hits him, for the second time, that he will never see his parents again. Everyone tries to comfort him but the jar is in the way.
No Refunds? Or perhaps
[100 Fathers Who Really Really Really Really Love You]
Interpretations of Subaru sneaking into the Royal Selection Ceremony, dueling Julius, and fighting with Emilia get WILD in Dogshow lmao.
Some highlights:
Anastasia: All of this was Emilia’s fault. Subaru was traumatized by the maids she failed to keep in line, conditioned to view her as his singular pillar of goodness and safety, allowed to run wild without any proper discipline despite working as her servant for at least a month — Subaru isn’t really BLAMELESS or anything, he’s still got issues, but a lot of those issues specifically stemmed from circumstances that she caused either directly or through her failure as his liege. Also Subaru — might actually have a mental disability, because holy shit he really wasn’t able to read the room AT ALL was he??
Julius: Torn between guilt at having beaten Subaru to a pulp when he apparently didn’t even really know what a duel was and horror at the realization that, had he not stepped in, there was a good chance that Subaru would have ended up in a death loop at the hands of his fellow knights. He hates this.
Emilia: She’s crying in the corner. She doesn’t even entirely disagree with him now that she understands what he was referencing during their fight. Her poor knight.
Garfiel: Nearly breaks Julius’ nose on the spot. If Otto hadn’t jumped in, Julius would have let him.
Otto: Horrified. Julius doing that legitimately saved Subaru’s life. He can’t stop thinking about what would have happened if Subaru had died for that slight. And then died again, and again, and again…
Ricardo: This isn’t nearly as funny or cute as he thought it was going to be. This is just…sad.
Also not just Anastasia but it's the first time I've seen Ricardo given pretty much any type of attention or characterization whatsoever.
Ricardo’s fun because he’s normally just so chill, and you get the sense that he’s genuinely this really mature dude who’s been around the block a few times and therefore is able to deal with hotheaded youths rather easily — especially when said youths are dealing with issues as relatively benign as “can be a bit of an asshole to their friends sometimes.” And then at the same time, he’s a mercenary captain, a former slave, a guy who’s legitimately capable of cold-blooded murder — it’s a fun dichotomy. Though of course, we only really see this chill, likable ally within the main route because we only really see him when he’s interacting with SUBARU, who he clearly sees as a daft but very charming youngster who also has some serious grit when things get serious.
The Dogshow fic is not a chill situation, however, so I’m having some fun actually making him get seriously upset for once lol. It’s easy to keep him as his usual self, but I think that this is one of the situations that would genuinely, deeply rattle him, and exploring that is very fun :)
Ricardo is a merc with experience in killing would they be really that effected by seeing that I mean ricardo hardly ever knew Subaru not to mention Anastasia whose scar has echidnas personality I can imagine her suggesting that Subaru should be trained to gain a stronger mind by first killing him repeatedly in many diff er ent ways of death until he learns to keep his mind stable like first cutting him to death thousands of times then burning him alive
You know. I’d think that you were joking, if you hadn’t sent me the first half of this ask like fifteen times over the past five months.
