there are certain places i will never outgrow: scenes with softly burnt hair, local fair booths staffed by lonely jewelers, loose candy molding itself into the sidewalk. last night, a friend of mine asked me if something was wrong -- we were sitting at a checkers drive-through, the air conditioning on full blast, watching a group of high school boys pressing their elbows into a picnic table. i said no, just that i am learning how to remember things, how to preserve them without breaking. just an hour earlier, i passed by the building in which i sat at a table with my friends at class night, the lights and music folded into a sterile, lightheaded memory. when i remember it, i tend to gravitate toward the day after, when i told my english teacher that something felt incredibly genuine, but it wasn’t the same thing everyone else felt. this year, though, we didn’t go inside -- instead, we watched hot air balloons rise, the light spilling something that felt more dangerous, more urgent. i don’t know how to be afraid anymore, i wrote somewhere. it has taken months to realize it, but i know it like the back of my hand now: this mess is not mine to make. perhaps it was, but not anymore. today, too, what happened in dc: an almost-tragedy that skipped us by an hour. it’s okay, i told someone. we feel nothing at all. I think of the word “lucky” a lot, but not in the way you’d expect -- i am fortunate to know that no matter where i am, what happens is not my fault. it is no one’s fault. all i have is this wide, incurably strange space between me and those whom i love, the ones who have asked me again and again if something is wrong, if i am not telling them something. i am so lucky to have them. i am so exhausted, especially when i don’t know what to make of this place. i think i’ll miss it more than i think, even if i don’t know how to long for it anymore.
