Once HDL grew out of their crib Donald gave them his bed and got his hammock. A single hammock being much cheaper than three beds they'd outgrown soon anyway. The bed broke so he kept the hammock and got the triple bunk beds.
It broke cause the boys were jumping on it so hard that they broke the bed and the floor and almost sank the house boat. Again.
Donald still tucks the boys into bed every night. Because of how often he'd work late and miss bedtime when they were young the times he could tuck them in were very precious to all of them. And even though they're 'too old' they don't want him to stop.
Donald put banisters on the boys bunkbeds, they find them annoying now. They can't scare each other by popping out of the side and yelling 'boo!', which is obviously more important than safety. When they moved into the mansion they found a triple-bunkbed in a spareroom (cause why would Scrooge not have one) and decided to see if they could get away with sleeping without banisters. Donald's been too busy to set them up with new banisters and they hope he won't notice despite tucking them in every night.
The truth is that Beakly installed a charm on their bunks that keeps them from falling out while asleep. Donald knows.
Donald can sleep through a thunderstorm, but if he hears so much as a sniffle from his boys he's wide awake.
When the boys were in kindergarten they made a sleep mask in arts and crafts for Mother's Day. They were supposed to give it to their mom but they presented it to Uncle Donald in all its stickery, glittery glory, saying he fit the criteria of 'devoted, thoughtful and passionate' so he should have it, despite being the wrong gender. Of course he started crying and put it on to hide the tears. And that's how Donald got his sleep mask from Storkulese in Duckberg. (The stickers and sparkles came out after many years of washing.)
It was really hard for HDL to sleep in the mansion at first, they weren't sure why though. Then they realized that it was because they weren't used to sleeping on solid ground. Huey did some research for tricks to get used to their new sleeping location and they're okay now.
They sneak back into the houseboat if they can't sleep or have nightmares and crash on the couch.
Their old bunkbed is still in their old room but they prefer the couch.
On those mornings Donald lets them sleep in, he leaves early for work, but always fixes them a pot of hot cocoa and leaves it on the table for when they wake up.
They try not to disturb their Uncle, even with nightmares. (But if they're truly shaken he'll be woken or if they just can't keep their sobs quiet enough he'll wake up and comfort them.) So his letting them sleep in and hot cocoa are his way of giving comfort in this 'don't disturb my sleeping family member' game.
Making hot cocoa the morning after a nightmare was what Hortense used to do when Donald or Della had nightmares.
If the boys get sick or injured and need to stay in bed Donald brings them to their beds in the houseboat. There is a sick/injury room in the mansion but Donald feels better being as near them as he can if they need him. They feel better in their old room anyway, it's quieter on the houseboat and they're less likely to infect the house this way.
Post-finale, Donald keeps the boys bunk bed in their room, even though May and June sleep there now, for just such situations as this.
May and June don't actually sleep in the beds. They've embraced boat life and have hung hammocks between the bunks.
Donald installed a fold-up berth for Daisy. For the trip, they'd planned on her just using the boy's room and bed, but once May and June entered they had to rethink that. Donald wasn't even sure she'd still want to go on the trip, there wasn't much room in the houseboat and less now with two girls. But Daisy was the one who suggested the berth. And she suggested putting it in his room. Which he did later that day.
While Donald was on vacation on the moon and island the boys slept in the houseboat every single night. They didn't plan to, it just kinda ended up that way. They wouldn't be able to sleep so one at a time they'd waddle out to the boat and curl up on the couch or their bunks or Donald's hammock. After a solid week of this they just skipped the tossing and turning in the mansion and together went straight to the houseboat every night.(I did the math and we never technically see them sleeping in their beds in the mansion after The Golden Spear. We see them in those beds but not sleeping in them. Just let me have this, please.)
