#duel commander

So, to come back to the subject of Magic, earlier this month I participated in an online tournament in Duel Commander format, where I played an Octavia control deck. It was swiss rounds with 6 rounds, and I went 1-4-1, which is satisfying to me.

I made several mistakes in many of these games, but I skill got valuable lessons from them. Mainly, I identified cards I do not vibe with anymore (lol) and wish to remplace. I will also be testing another version of the deck, in which I play more around cantrips and draw, instead of turbo milling to get Octavia out earlier. This way I think I’ll be able to handle the aggro match up better, since it’s the match up I had the most hard time with.

The game I won was against Dihada reanimator, who couldn’t beat me at all since I had a counter for all their big cards and for Dihada too. Dihada wasn’t able to enter the battlefield once, and I was able to efficiently bounce and counter the big threats.

I drew against another control deck, Ertai, because I won the first game, he won the second game, and there was no time for the third one lol. Control match ups are really tough but really fun, because it’s harder to me to know what I should be countering or not, and myself how to bait my opponent’s counters and answers. I particularly enjoy counterspells wars lol, I think some people have clever ways of handling them and it makes me feel smart (which I enjoy too lol)

Vial Smasher BANNED in Duel!

Duel Commander’s banlist has been updated today. Yasimin, better known as Vial Smasher the Fierce, is no longer a legal commander for this format. It has been deemed that in a format with a lower life total and only one opponent, her ability is simply too strong.  Note that this is only for the Duel Commander format. She is still perfectly legal in other Commander formats. Further, she is only banned as a commander. She may still be played in the 99.

Also banned in this update is Breya (as a Commander only), Chrome Mox, and Mox Diamond.

I will say that today I got to cast Stern Scolding (pictured below), and while I am notoriously not a fan of universes beyond, being able to tell someone "you can't play that creature because Gandalf thinks it's a bad idea" is very funny. Also, in flavor, we're supposed to be planeswalkers slinging spells at each other, I think Gandalf is allowed to participate (and to throw your summons in the well at Moria)

Me : huh people are playing a format that I kinda can afford one deck in and has hundreds of players in my area... I should make a deck (duel commander)

Also me : Pauper has a 4 to 8 people FNM that I have to take 3 busses and 2 trains to get to??? Where is my 5th deck??? Where do I sign????

Been playing some Duel Commander these days. It’s a format with its own banlist that is basically legacy singleton with a commander. The meta is a ton of fun and you see commanders you would almost never see in multiplayer, or would be kinda weak (like Dennick).

I play mono blue Octavia, and while it’s not that good I’ve had good results against friends ! I’m in an online tournament where we’ve got only one match every three days and so far I’m 0-2......... but there are 6 swiss rounds, so I’m hoping I will at least win one match lol. Wish me luck!
