skybox is funny to me because the backstory for his association with rhodes island is that he was the grunt that brought doctor meals back when doctor was in prison in columbia and he liked doctor so much that he was like i Have to suck up to this one, they're gonna be the contact that lets me make it big someday, and then through a long series of coincidences he ended up being right about that, so yeah he's a rotten corrupt government official, but he's in rhodes island's pocket and abusing his authority to get oripathy meds into columbia, so,
One pitfall when trying to analyze fantasy settings based on real world history is ignoring all of the worldbuilding implications the magic has, and I notice some posts here are maybe a bit over-eager about sharing such information to the point where they fall into it.
For example, posts saying that fantasy settings where gender equality and queer people are normalized are unrealistic because in real life the child mortality rate was very high and etc.
Except they're talking about a story is not set in Real Life Medieval Europe but in a world with versatile healing magic made accessible even to the poor to some degree through church charity or government public health institutions, and even spells or magical items that can instantly and completely transition someone.
Or that one post that was going around about how expecting the demon army to surrender after the defeat of the demon king is "great man theory" but in pretty much all fantasy settings that have such a thing as a demon king he's usually a demigod who can legitimately solo armies, is physically near-invulnerable, and obliterate entire cities.
Killing the demon king in such a setting would be less like assassinating the president and more like erasing the enemy's nuclear weapons. It's actually credible that the balance of power might start to shift from there even ignoring the effects on morale.
If you ignore stuff like that you might actually be engaging with the setting less than the rationalist fanfic writers.
I really love the bit in A Practical Guide to Evil where a noble who's nagging Catherine to get married and produce an heir tells her "if your majesty prefers the company of women, the House of Light does have access to certain miracles..."
Like, on the one hand it's a fun way to establish that it's a queer-friendly setting - nobody is inherently opposed to having a lesbian queen, they've had this problem before and you can solve it with magic. But at the same time it highlights the reason a magical solution would be necessary - because she needs an heir to ensure the continuity of her dynasty. And that problem isn't going to get handwaved with magic - the question of "how does Catherine ensure her reforms will outlive her?" is a major focus of the plot.
So the offhand mention of a convenient queer-friendly solution actually helps the story, by establishing that the nobles aren't just being sexist, they have serious concerns about the risk of a succession crisis!
Fate/stay night (2004) speaks of this as well. Merlin's cock magic is known.

i re-watched it several times, looking for what he does differently. finally i spotted it. look at the line of motion in his strike. it’s not especially fast, he doesn’t wind up more than the others, and it’s not a matter of strength – the guy who knocked over the stand probably put more muscle into it. but there’s a unity of movement he has that the others lack. his body and sword are all one curve. everything moves at once along the same line.
from a physics perspective, that means all the force he’s applying is concentrated at the point of contact between his sword’s edge and the target, and it moves at just the speed that breakage propogates through the material. too slow and it wouldn’t have enough force; too fast and he’d get ahead of the break, shoving the target over instead of cutting it.
from a writing perspective, that means that i should focus on describing a master swordsman’s smoothness more than their strength or speed, and can also have witnesses be confused at the effectiveness of strikes that don’t actually seem all that fast.
Martial arts are all about physics, my karate sensei is has a mechanic/physics diploma and he loves to explain the biomechanics of human body and how this was turned into fight via martial arts. It’s a very good way to teach. The sword master has a larger stance of the feet, much more than the others, allowing his barycenter to lower and thus giving more stability. This, united with the movement of the sword that follows the angle of his body increases the power of the blow without actually using too much muscle strength. Pretty sure he’s also just tending (not contracting) the muscles under the armpits, near the rib cage, the serratus anterior. That makes a huge difference.

What was most interesting to me is size has no correlation to success for any of the people.

i was like 'it's weird the way everyone is doing free pr for the catholic church rn just bc the pr for the new pope has already been that good' and someone was like 'wait? why don't you like the pope? did something happen?' i feel insane i'm not exaggerating i didn't even know what to say?? 'did something happen?' yes the last 2 thousand years of global history, and no, going back 2,000 years in catholic history is not dramatic because it's remained consistently that bad throughout and in fact i do think the church should answer for every single century of its sins while all of its assets are returned to the people from which they were stolen and its global power is dissolved.
