The Tale of Goli Otok – The Floating Island That Sparked a Border Dispute
In the early 2000s, during a particularly dry summer, water levels in the Danube River dropped significantly, revealing a curious landmass that had long been hidden: a small, vegetated island that locals dubbed "Goli Otok" ("Bare Island" in Serbian). Though the Danube typically shifts its course slowly over time, this sudden appearance of a clearly defined island drew attention.
What made Goli Otok notable wasn’t just its unexpected emergence—it was its location, right along a disputed stretch of the Serbian-Romanian border near the Iron Gates gorge. Serbia and Romania have a largely agreed-upon boundary, but the precise water border can shift slightly with the river’s flow. With the new island popping up mid-river, each side started to casually claim it.
Fishermen from both countries began using the island for docking boats or drying nets. One year, a Romanian local even planted a flag there as a joke, which quickly escalated into a brief diplomatic exchange. No real conflict ensued, but border police from both nations began to keep a closer eye on river activity in the area, and the "ownership" of Goli Otok quietly became a running joke among locals.
To this day, the island appears and disappears with the Danube’s moods, depending on the season and rainfall, remaining a symbol of the river’s power to shift borders—not just on maps, but in minds.
Дунав
Često poželim
da na klupi
sedim sa tobom
kao ono junsko veče.
Pa da dočekamo jutro
i da se izgubimo u vremenu,
onako kako samo mi umemo.
Odlutani,
bežeći od bučne gužve,
iako nam je oboma
prisustvo drugih ljudi
oduvek bilo
pomalo dosadno.
Svaka razmena reči
vodila nas je u daleke beskraje,
bar nam to nije teško padalo
teme su se preplitale,
od lepote prirode,
preko enterijera od kojih ti zastane dah
do toga kako ne voliš mleko,
ja se smejem
tvojoj duhovitosti,
ti mi pričaš
o svojim ranama
za koje niko ne zna
i veruješ mi.
Vreme stoji,
mi postojimo.
Volim da ćutim sa tobom,
znaš,
čudno je,
ja baš retko volim da ćutim
sa nekim
u istoj meri
kao što volim
svoju samoću.
Valjda jer je dovoljno
tvoje prisustvo
da sam bezbedna i mirna,
valjda jer po prvi put
ne moram da budem jaka
i mogu da budem tužna
bez postavljanja
nekih dodatnih
glupih pitanja.
Ti si moj odmor od svega
i moj smiraj kad sam nervozna.
I valjda zato što ti je uvek,
ali uvek stalo,
da budem nasmejana
i trudiš se da me nasmeješ
kad mi, ama baš, ni mrvicu
nije do toga.
a ti drugi deo lekcije.
I valjda jer si to ti,
a meni je stvarno dugo vremena
trebalo da progledam,
da shvatim,
da bih sedela sa tobom
na istoj toj klupi,
i da nam je uvek,
kada smo zajedno,
junsko veče,
pa da se ispričam sa tobom
na kraju dana
dok sa osmehom,
Dunavom i tvojim zagrljajem
dočekujemo
naredno
junsko
jutro.
