“Shoot!” The teen exclaimed as she fell to the ground, watching as her board rolled away. Her body hurt from the impact, but she wasn’t in any rush to get up. At least, not until some boy came near her skateboard. Bringing herself up from the ground, she scowled at him. “Hey! What are you doing?” She asked defensively, wiping the dirt and gravel off of her body. “That belongs to someone!”

The Case of the Quarry Monster
Ever since he had stepped out from the frigid waters of Lake Michigan, Bruce wondered without pause just when he was finally going to feel the reassuring cover of water again. How long had it been since he had even seen a lake, or anything larger than a creek? Days? Weeks? The Cetus had lost count and his otherwise lumbering gait rushed with more urgency. It wasn’t just the feeling of homesickness; he was a sea beast, after all. No- water provided comfort to his skin which had began to dry with its long exposure to the elements. Not only that, deep water gave the giant sharklike creature cover. Security. A means of hiding his massive self from possible hunters or any humans with poor consciences.
Or any humans scared enough to alert authorities.
Bruce had only narrowly evaded a group of deer hunters a few miles back. Hopefully they had done nothing more than chalk the oversized beast as just an enormous and oddly-colored black bear. Would he have heard anything otherwise? Or were they biding their time? Gathering forces to take him down and, within a day or two, he would be nothing more than a pair of jaws- a trophy mounted on someone’s wall?
He was getting paranoid. Breathe, c’mon. Breathe. One claw in front of the other. Just one step after another. Just-
The faint noise of water lapping against a shore, and splashing against rocks elicited a visible pause in the twenty-footer. A lake? A river? The Cetus picked up the pace to a near bearlike gallop until the trees cleared and the view presented itself in all of its glory. A lake! Better yet, a quarry! A deep pool of murky water with enough room to get his bearings and take a much needed respite from his weeks of foot travel! After all, his species was only semi-terrestrial, and they only ever tended to migrate in the ocean. The constant pressure of weight on his limbs had near exhausted Bruce at the moment, and he wished nothing more than to dive into the crisp, cool waters and feel weightless once more.
Only… Just as Bruce lumbered towards the shore, a figure walked out from the nearby shore, once hidden within the forest underbrush. Bruce ducked, retreating a meter or so behind the rock formation lining the shore. Oh, just his luck. His first possible moment of rest in miles, and now he had to deal with a human.
Strategies. He needed a strategy. Chase the bloke away? Take a chance and dive into the water? The former gave more possibilities of Bruce being found out. The latter would have to do.
Using every ounce of strength left, Bruce lunged into the water- and slammed headfirst into the mistakenly shallow area. The Cetus staggered back, his world spinning for a moment. Should’ve made a longer leap. Idiotic move. What was he, some inexperienced pup? His sensitive snout stung, blinding his olfactory senses and electroreception momentarily.
And a moment too late of finally gathering his composure, Bruce glanced back along the shoreline only to see his worst fears.
The human was staring right at him.

Since Eva’s birth, Circe made it her top priority to make sure each Father’s Day was as special as the last one. She wanted to teach their daughter how important Dustin was, even if Eva didn’t get to see him as often as she saw her. Of course, she told her this every day, but she made an effort to make Father’s Day a true celebration.
Circe had conspired with Claudia earlier in the month about this day. She came to her with her ideas to celebrate Dustin together as a family after his traditional Father's Day scavenger hunt. This year, the scavenger hunt highlighted Eva and Dustin’s favorite places. The zoo, especially the giraffe exhibit, the park and Eva’s favorite swing and the co-op Circe sold her cards at. Each location had a clue that led them to the next, and a few snacks to keep the pair motivated to continue throughout the day. Claudia, like the fantastic mother she is, was more than happy to assist in this surprise while they were out.
An event planned like a bank heist, the young mother planned everything so that Claudia would be arriving soon after Dustin and Eva had left. She waved a goodbye as the car rolled out of the parking lot. Eva and her untameable curly red hair continued to wave until she couldn’t see her anymore. Then, she headed back inside to start preparing, with her mother arriving a short time after.
The two spent the entire day cooking a variety of food. Macaroni and cheese with fried chicken, french fries (more for Eva’s sake) and even a small taco bar. The apartment had been overrun by the smell of the desserts - chocolate cake and double chocolate chip cookies. The table had been set with personalized laminated placemats that Eva had decorated weeks before. Circe, pregnant with their second child, fell asleep again on the couch.
