September Workshop -Digging the Dvergar: Developing Relationships with Dwarves
Date: 9/28/2025 at 7pm EST Description The Dvergar, Dwarves, are a group of vaettir, spirits, in Heathenry. These hardworking vaettir are legendary crafters, creating many powerful tools for the Gods, such as Óðinn’s spear Gungnir, Þórr’s Hammer Mjölnir, and Freyja’s Necklace Brisingamen. They are so much more than crafters. Come, and learn how to develop respectful, good relationships with…

Andvari, the dwarf who hid in a lake as a pike. He had an enormous pile of treasure all to himself, so to keep it safe he decided to secret it away along with himself, the only one who knew where it was. What's the point of having a bunch of treasure if you can't spend it, show it off, or sleep on it? Maybe just owning it and knowing it's there is enough to him. idk, dwarfs are weird.
Also, don't ask my why his pike skin has external gills like an axolotl, because I don't remember.
Fun fact: Originally in Norse mythology, the “dwarfs” (of their proper Nordic name the “dvergar”, singular dvergr) were not identified by their height. They were not particularly small - in fact they usually had the same size as humans or gods. Their small stature only came later in popular imagery and popular depictions. What mostly defined dwarfs were their supernatural crafts, their habit to live under the ground or under mountains, and that they turned into stone under the sunlight.
A new chapter of the Wulfgard webcomic begins! We return to the mighty Dwarves with page 1 of chapter 8! Check it out here: http://comics.wulfgard.net/

Notes: Hooooooooo boy. Another long one. The fabled part two of the alfar's entry. Compared to them, dwarfs have a lot more information about them out there. They play parts in several myths and sagas, and figure into folklore a lot more. Also probably helps that Tolkien gave them the spotlight in the Hobbit. One part that Tolkien neglected to add is their spookiness and spiritual nature. Not a bad thing mind you, it would only serve to make them incomprehensible to readers. But, since everyone and their mother rips him off, they rarely get to know the dvergar that inspired his dwarves in the first place. Still. Unpopular opinion: the Hobbit is waaaaayyyy better than the Lord of the Rings.
The image is... kind of lighter than the entry would make you think... So, I’ve been playing two games during my week of quarantine. This first being Animal Crossing. When wishing to illustrate the many silly names of the dwarves, the idea of drawing them in a similar style as that came into my mind. Firstly, because a lot of those names are just stupid and adorable, secondly because I wanted to draw something adorable and silly because I needed it. A lot of them were used by Tolkien in his works, but almost never did he reference how crazy some of them were. Some of them, like Bomburr and Ai are straight up dead people, but others toe the line a little. Probably the most recognizable is Brokk, though even he has donkey legs, befitting his stubborn personality. The most human is by coincidence Gandalfr, more elf-like than any of the others as well. But my favorite, without a doubt, is little Nabbi, no bigger than a thumb.
Who's your favorite? Who's your least favorite? Who would make the best neighbor in Animal Crossing? Just kidding, they're all anti-social.
