18: a random memory from your childhood
ive been thinking recently about the first time i ever came out so someone: it was sixth grade, and we were walking through these local woods for gym class. i told my two best friends at the time that i was bi girl and they said they could totally tell and were completely cool about it….probably because it was edgy/cool for us as conservative rural kids lol
Who are your fav OCs?? What do they like to do?? What were their childhoods like?? What are their goals in life?? Do you pair any of your OCs??
!!
i’ll talk about ferro since she’s kind of my fave at the moment (tho historically deneb, jonah, and jack of diamonds tend to come up more than usual)
she’s my dnd character for admittedly, a few campaigns (not concurrent, but she’s carried over) half fighter-half bard, old battle mom who inspires people by reciting epics. her current story is that she’s trying to find her wife (who went missing) so mainly her thing is to bash heads in until she gets where she needs to be
in her downtime (which is very scarce now), she’s fiercely interested in others’ stories, like adding them to her collection of bardic stories. she’s also interested in both poetry and pottery (she likes to imagine practicing a really peaceful craft once she settles down with her wife again)
her childhood was pretty unordinary, she came from a middle class family but was always sorta scrappy. she played with other kids pretty well but never really made any lasting friends. eventually she realized she couldn’t stand anyone around her, and wouldn’t really be missed (relationship with her parents soured, they became distant. when they were there they pushed her towards a cramped future) so she left home at about 18 (actually late 17) to go join the army and never looked back.
at this point ferro is putting her entire drive on the hope of a future without pain and combat
and as for oc pairs i have a few, of course ferro and her wife, jackson and jonah, and an unnamed couple i refer to as the necromancer queen and her knight (which is not a good relationship, but their whole story is kind of about that)
Wooo this got really long, like way longer than I thought it would be. But if you want to read about my original character, here you go!
C: (Fav original character/Fav character written by someone else) Well, my favorite character of my own to write is definitely Nich (pronounced like Nick), one of the main characters of my novel. He reminds me so much of me in how he deals with things and how he reacts to challenges. He just has so many things stacked against him, be it his mental illnesses or his sexuality or his family, but he keeps fighting. His inner monologues are always my favorite because they’re so much ‘what do I do? why do I think this? what if this happened? how should I do this?’ That and his interactions with his family, be it his distant mother or asshole brothers. Nich is definitely my favorite and if someone told me he would be instead of the other main character Olivia when I was writing the first draft, I probably would have laughed.
Now, my favorite character written by someone else… probably Laurent from the Captive Prince trilogy. (I’d say Hux too but honestly I enjoy every fan interpretation of him, and thats too much to narrow down. Plus I can’t just say from Star Wars because… he only has three and a half minutes of screen time, and while Domhnall did magnificent work in those three minutes, my love for Hux is buried deep in subtext and not what happened during the plot of Force Awakens) ANYWAY, Laurent… God, I don’t know how to fully describe Laurent. Laurent does remind me of a lot of Hux in the way he’s so ‘I don’t fucking care what anyone has to say to me.’ He’s so blunt and so apathetic and only lets down his walls for one person and even then it takes A LONG time for him to be frank with Damen. I love how he always has another plan up his sleeve and how he refuses to show if anything gets to him.
Personally I think Laurent is how my character Nich wants to act, but is unable to control his emotions as well as Laurent can. I like both of these characters because they do only confide in a few people and if those people hurt them it really shows later on in how they confide to other people. They walled off and broken down but eventually someone special takes those walls apart and allows them to be themselves again, past all the trauma and emotional/physical abuse they’ve faced in the past.
P: (Goals for the future with your writing) Oh Lord, definitely get published. At this point that’s the be all-end all for me. Of course, I’d love to become a best selling author and have a large fandom later on but thats just fantasy at the moment. My real long term goal is to get a literary agent and get my novels published by a respectable publisher.
Y: (Perfect prose? Describe your prose) Um… I’m not really sure if I can describe what ‘perfect prose’ is. But I’ll do my best. For me, it would probably be prose where you can honestly feel the atmosphere come off the page in front of you and it’s one of those books that literally pulls you in and you’re kind of disoriented after finishing it. A good mix of description and characters. I hate when I don’t know where characters are and how it feels to be to be where they are. I take description rather seriously. But I’ve also noticed recently, writers will focus on those two things (characters and description) at the expense of their plot, which in turn gets messy and hard to follow. This is passable when it’s a rather simple plot (i.e. Captive Prince) but when it gets complicated the book almost falls apart for me (i.e. Raven Boys).
My prose however… I’d like to think I have good descriptors. I’ve had reviews and teachers tell me that before so I think it’s true. My favorite part to write are the characters, so I hope they’re good too. I think my writing is more rooted in characters than in the plot, but I also don’t consider my plots too complicated or involved. I’m working hard currently on making the atmosphere very tangible and real. Because when I read books with good atmosphere, they immediately become my favorite because I want to emulate the feeling of them in my own writing so badly.
