Activist Maung Zarni, a former ally of Aung San Suu Kyi, responds to the Tibetan Buddhist teacher’s support for Myanmar’s controversial leader.
Right when you start thinking Dzongsar Jamyang Khyentse Rinpoche may just be ok, he goes and does something unnecessary. Why is he so extra?
So i don’t know if you’ve been following his activities online, but he’s become more and more vocal these days against what he calls “western liberalism.” I’m not quit sure who the actual target is tho, but he uses those words a lot.
Anyways, he’s been on a rambling rampage against western liberalism for some time and it happens to coincides with the #metoo movement hitting Tibetan Buddhism in the west.
I don’t quit disagree with everything he has said on the topic but like I said I’m not quit sure who he’s talking about. Sometimes it sounds like he’s talking about the westernization of Tibetan Buddhism. Which is ironic because his popularity among foreigner practitioners coincides with such developments, but maybe it’s also a reaction to an element in western secularization of Tibetan Buddhism that has made the need for actual Tibetan spiritual teachers obsolete. Who needs the teachers when you can access translated texts? Who knows? But the target of his criticism is definitely confusing since he never quit names them.
Whatever the case, the timing of his criticisms is also interesting. They coincide with the #metoo movement hitting white buddhist communities with stories of Tibetan and nonTibetan lamas (all based in the west) abusing their students. Around this time alot of these sorts of criticism was being made by him, and also sessions where he goes on and on about real abuse famed buddhist historic figures suffered at the hands of their masters. Is it really just coincidence that right when allegations of abuse between teacher and student are becoming public, he’s making forceful arguments about teacher student abusive disciplinary practices that existed in the past?
You can’t deny the timming. Not to mention, he posted and removed an insensitive post against #metoo developments in the western sanga community.
While I do agree with some of his criticisms whether against notions of Tibetan Buddhist practice as easy and watered down, white authors stealing Tibetan Buddhist knowledge and passing them off as theirs, and western liberalism more broadly, I’ve been struck by the timming of it all.
Also, why did he bring Aung San Suu Kyi into this?
In any case, the whole letter came off a bit random and insensitive to the plight of Rohingya (he called them imported laborers under the British, while the authors above clarified they’re native to the Arakan Kingdom). The letter also gives credence to the false claim by those who are suspicious of Tibetan Buddhists as islamaphoic for not supporting the Rohingya case (which isn’t true, most Tibetans, including His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama have been vocal against the militaristic Myanmar state). I definitely won’t appreciate if and when Tibetan Buddhists collectively get caught in the crossfires for this hot mess of a letter.
Anyways, I would say DJKR walked right into this response. The authors rightly take issue with minimizing of the issue of genocide taking place in Burma. Maybe he needs to take his own advice and stop acting like a white hipster making noise for the sake of noise, and butt out of things he’s not so aware of.
On the other hand, my friend had this to say:
If you want to write a post about how you dislike western imperialism and hypocrisy, do that. But don’t coopt other peoples lives and suffering and politics to do it. Especially when you aren’t as informed on the issue as you think you are or pretend to be. It's tacky.
In other words, stay in your lane.
