Having re-read the original trilogy in preparation for this, I wasn't disappointed to read this one. It's another dual plot book, this time following Max and Ben, the sons of Todd and Viola. Todd and Viola feature in the storyline too, but Max and Ben are the viewpoint characters.

As with the original trilogy, there's a lot of humans being human type politicking. Bigotry, zealousness, the same corruption of power that featured in the Chaos Walking trilogy, although without the ambition of Mayor Prentiss. The enemy this time is interplanetary and also possibly historical; there's a Pied Piper retelling going on behind the scenes, but this time from The Land, which I love we get more of their lore, and hope it continues into the next book. The ending is a cliff hanger, but I'm very much looking forward to the next book already.

I found the premise of this one interesting, but also quite a slow burn. To me the eventual climactic reveal felt overly complicated, as if the original suspect wasn't enough to make the story work, but your mileage may vary on that one. Once I got through the first third or so I found the action much more worthwhile, and the eventual conclusion and epilogue more than satisfactory. I had some suspicions throughout the book but they were all set aside due to further plot developments, which perhaps isn't the best kind of mystery/thriller for me, personally. I don't mind a good red herring, but there were so many in this book it began to feel a little bit like a smokery. Fine if you like that sort of thing, but not entirely my cup of tea.

It's a quick read, although it's taken me a couple of days to marshal my thoughts on the overall plot. There were some sections that felt a little formulaic for me, and the somewhat meta nature of the books title didn't sit well with me either, but it's an overall decent read, mostly stand alone. By which I mean you can read it without reading any of the other books in the series (as indeed, I did) without losing anything essential, but there are nods back to the other books in the series for those who might have already been aware of them.

The sapphic relationships are pretty well done, and it was a nice change to see older protagonists falling (back) in love with one another instead of some odd love triangle or otherwise clichéd plot going on. And I liked that it was made clear that there was work to be done still as well; it's a happy ending, but not the 'perfect' ending that might have ruined it for me.

It's a solid ghost story. I didn't find any of the characters, scientist or indigenous particularly relatable, but the plot itself was interesting enough. The more it went on the more I found myself disliking the main character, but I'll give him this: he can tell a good ghost story. I think the creep factor he has in general makes the story all the more chilling; if Simon could leave well alone then we wouldn't get this story at all. Very much a character to whom the consequences of his actions have returned to roost.

The somewhat epistolary style of the first two thirds or so of the book were reminiscent, to me, of a podcast I used to listen to, and I found myself hearing his words in the tone of the main character therein, especially the bits where he was more incredulous. Worth a read, then, if you're a fan of The Magnus Archives. Or even if you're not.

A delightfully funny read, with some serious moments that might be a touch anachronistic. There were a few small-town cliches, but the book overall is written very well, and turns out well in the end. It's not the sort of book I'd normally pick up in a book shop, but I figured I'd give it a look in and thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The characterisation was done quickly - I wanted to smack Barbara Beaumont the second I read her first bulletin, it was very Bless Your Heartish - and solidly, and I adored Emily's little inputs immensely. A fun read for sure.
