I used to draw all the time, mostly on the sidewalk outside our building. I’d take a few colored pieces of chalk and transform one concrete square after another into an entire village scene, raised in profile like you were seeing it in 3-D. I close my eyes and listen for the sound of girls my age jumping double-Dutch beside me as I drew, clapping hands with one another in sing-song unison: Miss Mary Mack, Mack, Mack; All dressed in black, black, black; With silver buttons, buttons, buttons; All down her back, back, back. She jumped so high, high, high; She touched the sky, sky, sky. She didn’t come down, down, down; ‘Til the Fourth of July, –ly, –ly Eventually a group of boys would shuffle past, stickball and bat in hand if not dribbling a bouncing basketball. Without breaking stride, they’d step out into the street to avoid smudging my artwork with their high top sneakers. That’s the only time people seemed to tolerate my strangeness, when I was outside their window creating a replica world on the sidewalk. The whole block looked on in fascination as I bent a new line into an already elaborate arrangement of cars and buildings, people intermingling in a scene reminiscent of the one surrounding my chalk mark creation. That’s the only time I tolerated them, too.
