the earn-it bill is back

I don’t have much to say, just please do what you can to push back against it.
If you don’t know what earn-it is, please just-read the post I linked to. If you’re in the USA, contact your senators and whatnot. Normally, I don’t like making posts like this, but this seems rather important methinks. I’m sure there’s plenty of other posts circulating around that tell you what it is anyways, but basically, as the EFF puts it in the post I linked above-
“A group of lawmakers led by Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) have re-introduced the EARN IT Act, an incredibly unpopular bill from 2020 that was dropped in the face of overwhelming opposition. Let’s be clear: the new EARN IT Act would pave the way for a massive new surveillance system, run by private companies, that would roll back some of the most important privacy and security features in technology used by people around the globe. It’s a framework for private actors to scan every message sent online and report violations to law enforcement. And it might not stop there. The EARN IT Act could ensure that anything hosted online—backups, websites, cloud photos, and more—is scanned.“
so, you know. That’s not exactly ideal, to say the least. Thanks a bunch for checking out this post. Catch you on the flipside.
I’m not an expert on being politically involved but I just emailed my representatives to oppose the EARN-IT Bill, and I encourage y’all to do the same. If you don’t know what to say, here’s what I wrote, if it helps:
Subject: Reject the EARN IT Act, S. 3398
I'm writing to express opposition to S.3398, the Eliminating Abusive and Rampant Neglect of Interactive Technologies Act of 2020 (the “EARN IT Act”). The EARN IT Act not only jeopardizes citizens' privacy and violates the first amendment but also fails to effectively protect children from online exploitation. I encourage you to support a different approach that respects constitutional rights to free speech and privacy while also making efforts to tackle online child sexual abuse in ways that are nuanced and effective.
The House and Senate are both pushing forward with the so-called “EARN IT” Act, a bill that will undermine encryption and free speech online
The House and Senate are both pushing forward with the so-called “EARN IT” Act, a bill that will undermine encryption and free speech online. Attorney General William Barr and the DOJ have demanded for years that messaging services give the government special access to users’ private messages. If EARN IT passes, Barr will likely get his wish—law enforcement agencies will be able to scan every message sent online.
The EARN IT Act (S. 3398) is anti-speech, anti-security, and unnecessary. It could come to the Senate floor this month—we need to tell Congress to reject this dangerous proposal.
