If you read my first post, you’ll know that around this time last month I was caught in a whirlwind of nerves on the night before my last drama school audition of the year.
Well, it turns out that I had no need to be - I had more fun at that single audition day than I did at all of the others combined. Everyone I met was just so lovely, auditionees and staff alike, and within about 10 minutes of entering the building I found my nerves almost completely subsided. It was definitely not what I was expecting, with most of my auditions having been a performance of my monologues for the panel, and then a quick chat before I leave. In all honesty I wish this had been my first audition of the lot - it helped me out so much with my portrayal of the characters, and I came out of it feeling so much more confident in the way I perform those speeches.
I must have done much better than I thought, because I have now accepted an offer of a place on their one year Theatre Arts foundation course, and I will hopefully be starting at the end of September this year (!!!!!!!). I can’t tell you how much of a relief it has been to receive that offer - had I not, I probably would have been well on my way to some form of existential crisis by now. Even though I already had offers from both Leeds and Birmingham, I think I knew in my gut that I wanted drama school to be my first experience of higher education, but I was still having a real dilemma trying to think about what I would do (go to uni, take a gap year etc.) if I hadn’t got in this year. But now, thanks to this, I can postpone my existential crisis for a whole ‘nother year - wahey!
By the way, in case you’re wondering, the drama school I am going to is East 15. I know I was being a mysterious little bitch about it, but it was more because I didn’t want to get my hopes up for something that I thought wasn’t going to happen. I said in my first post that this school wasn’t exactly my first choice when it came to drama schools, but I have a strong feeling that I’ll be very happy there next year.
This is honestly one of the best things that could have happened to me right now, so do excuse me if I’m a little too joyous in my next few posts.
A sincerely surprised student.
