The first known sighting of this orange showgirl costume with a black and white striped corset was in the 1946 film 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒗𝒆𝒚 𝑮𝒊𝒓𝒍𝒔, where it was worn by an extra, though it is possible that this piece originated with an earlier film.   The costume was worn by another extra in the 1948 film 𝑬𝒂𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒅𝒆.   It has almost certainly appeared in several other productions over the years, so keep an eye out! Archives Road Trip: North Carolina

The Penland Mountain School of Crafts (founded 1929) is nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. The historic school’s serene and secluded location fosters a strong sense of community. Penland student Peter Ray took this photograph in 1977 of an Easter parade, an annual occasion that brought together students and instructors to make creative costumes and props.

The photograph by Ray is currently on view in our exhibition, Off the Beaten Track: A Road Trip through the Archives of American Art, on view through June 3 in our Lawrence A. Fleischman Gallery in Washington, D.C.
